Part 1 of new musical storytelling piece by Ailsa Mair Hughes, as part of her project Soundmapping Our 5 Square Miles

Mae'n daith sain fer, dwyieithog, lled-ryngweithiol gyda naratif, cerddoriaeth a seinwedd naturiol o bob rhan o Gymru. Byddai'n ddelfrydol gwrando arno yn y cyfnos – beth am fynd ag ef am dro lleuad llawn?

Developed with the fabulous mentorship of Lisa Schneidau Storyteller, this is a short, bilingual, semi-interactive sound journey, with narrative, music and natural soundscape from around Wales. Ideally listened to at dusk - why not take it on a full moon stroll?

Through the conversation I had a wonderful insight into their work processes, relationship with the studio, working through a pandemic, and putting on their final shows!

Artist and musician Jem Finer and sculptor Richard Wilson discuss collaboration, reflecting on their projects – Finer on Longplayer and Wilson on A Slice of Reality – both commissioned on opposite sides of the Thames in the year 2000. Twenty-one years later, the talk marked Artangel's commission of Sonic Ray – an artistic installation which reconnected both projects, encoding the sound of Longplayer in a line of light, beamed across the river, to Wilson's wheel-house.

With an introduction by Artangel's Co-Director Michael Morris.

‘Voices’ is a new sound installation work created for a commission by Common Ground (working alongside Juneau Projects as part of 'Surroundings', a project by Invisible Dust in collaboration with Humber Museums Partnership, funded by Arts Council England). This installation, 'Voices', is featured alongside the work of five other selected U.K. artists as part of the Common Ground Art Trail, a public exhibition across various locations in North Lincolnshire which aims to highlight issues of biodiversity and wildlife conservation. 'Voices' is on show outside St Lawerence Church, Scunthorpe from 22/09/20 until 04/10/20.

‘Voices’ is an experimental sound work which combines distorted field recordings of birdsong with original vocal and multi-instrumental compositions. The environmental audio recordings were collected in response to the marked increase in the diversity and amount of birdsong experienced over lockdown. Lockdown facilitated an opportunity for deep listening and a more mindful engagement with nature; the thriving wildlife, in an environment less dominated by human activity, highlighted the impact of human interventions on the natural world. We must now question how we move forward after lockdown. This work, which juxtaposes industrial sounds and human voices with electronically manipulated birdsong and other environmental sounds, aims to highlight the decline in UK bird populations and the threat of extinction to many species caused by human interventions such as industrial scale intensive farming and the resulting loss of habitat diversity.

Voices

A Mile Radius from the Home (2’48”), sound composition from field recordings include; self composed folk song, military gun fire, conversation and birds song. 8 years after leaving, I returned to my family home for lockdown, the recordings were all documented within a mile radius of our house. Locations include Coygan Quarry, a Sustainable Aqua Farm and Laugharne Estuary with its history of cockle fishing, now 9 miles of Ministry of Defence land.
