Cette suite en cinq tableaux, aussi divers que les territoires qu’ils évoquent, est une immersion dans les sons de Arica, une ville chilienne si-tuée aux confins du Pérou et de la Bolivie, au cœur du désert d’Atacama. Successivement, une promenade le long de la zone côtière, les ambiances et voix d’une gare routière internationale, un marché agricole, une zone humide en péril, et les friches d’une gare ferroviaire inoccupée. 

Diego Véliz s’est formé au cinéma documentaire au Chili, à Cuba et en Espagne. Il est l’auteur des courts métrages projetés dans plus de 40 festivals. Il vit et travaille dans la région tri-frontalière du Chili, du Pérou et de la Bolivie, où il développe des projets artistiques avec sa société de production Candelabro Films. "Sound Desert" est son premier projet d’art sonore.

Diaphanousness

Commissioned by the American Composers' Forum and written for Tigue Percussion, 2019. Premiered 1/24/19 at The Kitchen, NYC.

Mass of Dissolution is a new work commissioned by the American Composers' Forum and written specially for the percussion trio Tigue. The piece is conceived of as an incantation against the blind violence of military-industrial power that dominates global dynamics. Combining extended techniques for percussion with dislocated fragments of traditional American drum corps music, this work takes an intense and abstract approach to contemporary percussion music. With an array of percussion instruments, from tympani to triangle, to random metal objects, these instruments are used to evoke the sound of helicopters, engines, and alarms – all industrial tools used in modern warfare. Direct musical references to military percussion repertoire taken from Wilcoxen's All American Drummer become a machine so tightly wound that eventually the apparatus seizes and violently disassembles itself.

Destroying Angel

with the help of the Administration of the National Cultural Fund

One of the first sociological and ethnographical documentary films in the world, made by Professor Dimitrie Gusti (1880-1955), founder of the Sociological School of Bucharest) and his team of trained sociologists and students. The documentary tracks the activities and customs from the mountain village Drăguş, later established as a privileged setting for Romanian sociologists and anthropologists. In composing, I looked for synesthesia, working with and without the image medium.

Simina Oprescu in 2015 graduated from the Department of Photo-Video at UNArte in Bucharest and in the period 2017-2018 she did one year in the acousmatic composition department of the Royal Conservatory in Mons, Belgium.

Charo Calvo is a Spanish electroacoustic composer, sound designer and teacher, living in Brussels. After having performed as a dancer with the influential Belgian dance company Ultima Vez, she started her studies on Electroacoustic Composition in 1992 with Annette Vande Gorne at Brussels Conservatory (now ARTS2 Mons). Graduated in 1999.
From 1992 her work as composer is being developed through different media, widely diffused on international venues and festivals, dance performances, theatre, film and radio. She has received several important awards such as Palma Ars Acustica 2014 EBU, Phonurgia Nova Awards Paris 2017, Prix Marulic 2018 Croatia, Grand Prix Nova Bucharest 2019 and was shortlisted for Prix Europa Berlin, Hearsay Prize Ireland.
Charo Calvo has been a guest of the prestigious residential program for international artists in Berlin DAAD Berliner Künstlerprogramm during the year 2017/2018. More at charocalvo.org
