My orchestration of my earliest piano composition, which evokes images of a snowstorm, finally dying away to a cold winter wind.  It combines youthful enthusiasm with the insights of age.

A marching-band trumpet piece, in a mariachi style, played on the KeyMusician Keyboard.  Using a MIDI router, 5 different instruments are played in unison for the melody, and likewise, 5 different instrument are played simultaneously for the chords.  The drum cadence is played on the MIDI player.  This gives a convincing marching band sound.

Of the 4 piano intermezzos (in the style of Brahms) I composed, this is my favorite.  Now I have orchestrated it, this is the ultimate version of the composition.  The picture is from the time period when I composed the piano version.

Sonata In F Minor

Trilogía Jabao: III. Las Siete Potencias

Leró is a short work for cello solo that shares the composer's free spirit of composition, his interest in percussion, and above all, the rhythms of Puerto Rican culture. However, unlike his other works for cello that are inspired by salsa, (Soneo de la 22 and Rumbo), Leró is inspired by the Puerto Rican bomba. Leró serves as the title of this piece, but it is also meant to be sung with the voice while playing the cello. It is an option that can be omitted, but in the interest of presenting the work in its entirety, I have recorded it with the voice. While this technique is utilized in other works by Ortiz, in Leró, it references the popular songs of the Puerto Rican bomba. Another way in which he experiments with this genre is through the incorporation of percussion passages. These are performed on the cello's body and serve as attractive interjections within the rest of the material while alluding to the language of the bomba drums.


Leró

“Elegía a los Inocentes Caídos”, which translates to “Elegy for the fallen innocent” is a work for Chorus and Orchestra in memorial of the massacre that took place on Palm Sunday, 1937 in Ponce, Puerto Rico.

     A peaceful civilian march turned into a police shooting in which 19 civilians and two policemen were killed, and more than 200 civilians were wounded. Most of the dead were reportedly shot in their backs. The march had been organized by the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party to commemorate the abolition of slavery in Puerto Rico, and to protest the U.S. government’s imprisonment of the party’s leader Pedro Albizu Campos.

     A free twelve-tone matrix is the musical language and style utilized that reflects the brutal violence of this historic occurrence. The biblical text, from Ecclesiastes, also conveys and addresses the helplessness, the anguish, the outrage, and the injustices that, unfortunately, still keep occurring during our times.

Composed for Life, The Universe, & Everything: The Marion K. “Doc” Smith Symposium on Science Fiction and Fantasy, held annually in February. As a writer too, I look forward to it like Christmas every year. It's so good being around other people who have a passion for creativity.
