The Ultimate Sacrifice

My God is swahili and english song which means our God he answers our prayer and our cry.

My God

We are a family of eleven. We are four brothers, five sisters and two parents, Dad and Mom. We were all born in Africa, in a country called the Democratic Republic of Congo, (DRC). We started playing music at a tender age. In those days, it was difficult to get a musical instrument, so we improvised. I remember we used to make our own drums by using inner tubes from tires and cans. We would go with our peers to perform street concerts. We continued that way for years. We loved music so much that we even joined groups that sang secular music. Our parents were both Christian, so they were not supportive of what we were doing.

War started in our country in the year 1998. So many people were killed. We lost many relatives. We had a good life there, but when war started, we lost everything Our house was burned down, and our business was stolen. We lost all that we had. One day we heard rumors that our Father was to be killed. He was targeted because he was preaching the message of peace during war. Our father had to hide. He went far away from us. Each time the soldiers came to look for him, they beat us. We were the ones facing the consequences of his absence We suffered a lot because of him. We became homeless. We had no clean water. We spent weeks in the forest just eating fruits. It was a hard life. When it became too much for us, we began seeking help. Good Samaritans passed near us and decided to help us. They took us to Kenya.

The whole family arrived in Kenya safe and sound. Our Mom and all nine children survived the journey. In Kenya, we found our Dad. Our family was reunited. We took that as a miracle from God and from that day forward, we chose to sing only Gospel music. From that day, we decided to sing for God. We wanted to thank God for protecting us.

Life in Kenya was hard. We were refugees and not allowed to work, so we used our talents to get food for our family. During this time, we started composing our own songs. We did not realize we had something special until people started telling us. We were invited to weddings, concerts, and birthday celebrations to sing and dance. We even sang in the refugee camp. After nine years, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) gave us resettlement in America. It was the greatest joy we had ever had .We promised God that we would continue to serve him in America.

We arrived in the USA in July 2009. My first musical instrument was a keyboard that I received from a friend. I bought a music book for beginners’ piano from the store and taught myself to play. My brothers also were given a guitar and drum and we all worked together. Today we have more than ten original songs. Since we have been in America, we have continued to sing and praise God wherever we are invited to go. Even today, we get calls from Africa asking us to sing to them on the phone. We have been waiting for God to open a door for us, so we can begin to record our music. Our group includes all nine children, the whole family of four boys and five girls. We love to sing and dance.

There are so many people who have died in the war and many more are still suffering. We are not better than those people. We see it as a favor from God. That is why we want to sing. It is our passion to sing for God and tell the world what he has done for us. We feel so lucky. This is the only way we can thank God for keeping us alive today. Thank you and God bless you.
