Episode 75: This week’s podcast is all about sin. Vanessa’s guest is Rick Christ, a senior consultant at Crisis Prevention and Response, Inc., and a FEMA Master Exercise Practitioner. Rick lays out his seven deadly sins of crisis management exercises. The sins are mistakes organizations commonly make in preparing for and conducting exercises to demonstrate their readiness to respond to a disaster. Vanessa draws Rick out on the details and asks what organizations can do to avoid committing the seven sins. Rick and Vanessa hit on these key points:
•	One problem with traditional crisis response is it is usually limited to response, leaving out such critical steps as prevention and mitigation. As Rick puts it: “After I break all your windows and fill your basement with water, I leave.”
•	Organizations don’t put enough effort into our Exercise Evaluation Guides. Rick says, “The difference between having fun with your toys and an exercise is measuring against your goal and recording that on your EEG.”
•	Too many organizations exercise specific scenarios rather than capabilities. As Vanessa says, “The crisis is insignificant; I don’t care how it happened. The issue is, it happened.”
Rick also explains what he means by saying most organizations exercise too big and dream too small, and he and Vanessa bond over their shared connections to Virginia, his current home, and the state she grew up in.

The 7 Deadly Sins of Exercises

Episode 76: This week Vanessa talks with Justin Pierce, emergency management director at Los Angeles World Airports in L.A., about the challenges involved in finding the right people to fill positions in emergency management. Earlier this year, Justin published an article on his LinkedIn page called “Coffee Shop Thinking: Hiring the Next Emergency Managers.” Vanessa loved the article, and this was the starting point for their conversation. Justin said he was motivated to enter emergency management by the attacks of 9/11. Vanessa interviewed him about some of the issues surrounding hiring new people for emergency management positions that he discussed in his article. 
•	When hiring someone to fill a vacancy, Justin said agencies should not seek to duplicate the skillset of the departing person but instead look for someone who can help them meet their most important goals of the next three to five years.
•	When he interviews job candidates, Justin looks for the intangibles of critical thinking, problem-solving, and a willingness to take the initiative.
•	For people trying to get started in emergency management, Justin suggests they get their foot in the door by joining a disaster aid organization, taking a free FEMA Independent Study (I.S.) course, or talking to their local fire or police chief.
Justin also said he only recently discovered Business Resilience Decoded and that he thinks the podcast is “amazing.” Vanessa summed up the ideal attitude for a new hire in emergency management as, “Put me in, coach!”
