To Bobby


Your daughter sang Silver Haired Daddy 

to the rhythm of a show band

Heady furrows of toil 

yielding a harvest of plenty

Porter and paddy by the hand

Scallions at the ready

Beige and tiny pretty purties  

lovely butter melting. 


Scythe wielded 

or raking up Paddy Keeve's yellow hay

into halcyonic nests of splendour

to the beat of many summers’ suns

A pot of Nelly's treacley golden tea 

and a scone with butter and jam

the reward offered from the hearth.


Sitting there like a lord 

Brown ox on a crumpled tweed jacket 

Twenty Major in the breast-pocket

Swilly, strong and wide

without malice unless provoked

Beaming pride and contentment 

that I can only dream of now 

Hardened hands, rough smokey calluses

laughing, blackguardery.



I help you slowly up the icy path
