Due to a rather successful open studio, I’ve had the pleasure of working with Gabriel Moreno. 
I knew of his music but never his poetry. Since I had been thinking about it just before our first interaction I thought I’d take the universe up on it’s coincidence and see what would happen

This piece is one of the few that we, both visually and musically, re-shaped and nourished. Because of that, it’s tone strays a little further from the usual and the visuals had to follow that.

Another fantastic one take wonder

At this point I’d become accustom to our creative process, accepting the spontaneity from both sides feeding off each other. I’m a big fan of mythology, so when listening back to this, I feel like I can hear the moments when I start to pay attention to the words being uttered, rather than just their tone. Leading to a cathartic moment halfway through with the chord finally resolving to my favourite spot. The video was tough since I try my best to avoid using fonts. I can’t tel you how many times I exported it and had another spelling error pointed out. I was focusing mainly trying to blend in the writing with the rest of the ethereal visuals. In the end, as painstaking as the rendering was, it was a joy to make and was only possible with Gabriel Moreno

The Rock

A piece I thoroughly enjoyed creating with Gabriel, simple yet effective. We never really know where the piece is going. Usually starting with "hey, what mood do you want". This is one of those rare piece that was a true one shot wonder. Sometimes it just works first time and just prefer not to think as to why... 
As for the video, a visual repeater is something I've experimented with in the past, convincing myself that i need to have special gear and complicated contraptions built before filming something Like most times, a couple of lights, a camera with a delicate contraption made up of chairs/boxes, gaffer tape and rope will do

Echoes

This was the final piece recorded in the Gibraltarian sessions.We began with The Spirit of Gibraltar, going to The Rock and ending with Mother.
By far my favourite outcome from our experiments, as per usual we improvised a vast majority of it, with my self only knowing how to begin. Starting off with the heavy bass notes, emphasising Mother, slowly transitioning to a lighter tone, dropping in pace and gravitas, drawing you in. 

My original idea for the video was much more complicated due to my need to preserve the visual narrative. Since this was the final video of the story, I wanted the red lantern to be the forefront and be set ablaze above a pool of lifelike essence. I made a first draft of the essence, using off cuts/failed experiments from another video I worked on and he said it was preferred the video as it was, without the lantern and fire.

The overall synchronisation of the piece , moments between the visuals, music and words coming together all in a beautiful one take wonder.  Having to learn it, whilst leaving some room for improvisation, was by far the hardest task with the most cathartic ending to this journey so far.

Mother

A few winters ago, I'd been these little moss trees flourish over a short period of time. This one evening it was raining I filmed the droplets on the moss outside my studio. Before I realised it, a snail interrupted the shot, for some reason I decided to keep filming. It might of been because of something Pete said, my stubbornness wanting to watch the snail reach the end or maybe the fact that my last name originates from a snail. In the end, I stuck with it and never had a snail or those droplets appear in that exact manor. A month or so later I made a solo piano piece and found myself struggling to come up with an idea for a film. As per usual, I put the only footage I had with the song and despite them not being consciously conceived for each other, for me... they just work. That's how Cyril Cornu Aspersum.

Cyril Cornu Aspersum

The organ is an instrument that I will forever adore. Growing up in a catholic family but having my own opinions, mass every Sunday wasn't exactly a blast for me. The one thing that kept me going was the dream that I would get my hands on the Cathedral Organ, once that time came, I found it hard to stop going back. So when I heard that title of this piece I had a feeling that I should is the organ due to the dark/haunting presence it can offer, especially since the poetry talks about death, miracles and life.

The Death Of Elizabeth Barrett Browning

Satellite State is a sound and video artist, composing soundscapes, and creating accompanying films, the two working synergistically. The musical language functions at several levels, with minimal, ambient, and expressive qualities. It hints at an overlying narrative to the visuals it accompanies, provides an interpretive voice to feelings, as well as enabling the listener to tap into their own internal thoughts and emotions. An enduring fascination with Space and Time is used as an expansive visual metaphor for these explorations in sound and vision. Satellite State also works collaboratively with poets and other artists/filmmakers and is open to more such collaborations.
