This painting and soundscape were produced together using "painthesis".   

A camera takes pictures of the evolving watercolour, the resulting image is processed using various algorithms.  The results of these algorithms are fed into a custom VCV rack plugin that is then used to modulate various properties of an evolving soundscape.  In some sense, the painting is producing the sound.

This track is around an hour long, the time for the painting to be completed from a blank piece of paper.

The audio tries to capture the sound of the windy beach;  the waves and surf, the wind, occasional metal clanging, and seagulls.  Later in the track, passive drums and a synth melody are introduced.

Throughout the piece, the painting controls various parameters, from the wind and surf, the shapes of the drums, aspects of the seagulls and the shaping of the metal sounds.  Occasionally there is a harsh transition, which is softened with a human touch.

Parts of the music were built on the fly, parts are human controlled, and others modulated by various sources and / or the painting itself.

All sound is generated using a combination of VCV rack, a hardware modular synthesiser, and some MIDI controllers.

Use headphones for the best experience, as some elements use the stereo field.
