Toner [ LIMINAL DREAMS ]

Toner grew up heavily influenced by movies, and was baptized into modern techno in the alternative underground music scene he encountered while living in Taiwan. After returning to Japan, he became a captive of the club and rave scene around Tokyo.  Before starting his DJ career, he has been involved in many events as a supporter and reporter, diving deep into the hot spots that continue to expand the boundaries of dance musics. 

Since 2022, he launched the community called "LIMINAL DREAMS" focusing on electronic ambient music with Toss and Kaana, and he has been directed the events in Tokyo. "LIMINAL DREAMS" is homage to the psychedelic chill-out culture that has been around since the 60's, and its community is for music enthusiasts of quirky contemporary electronic music. The event series are currently based in Tokyo and Vietnam, and recognized as a bridge between the ambient scene in the West to Asia.

Toner as a DJ has a strong minimalism approach to his musics. He is a humorous player and can weave a various story beyond the beat.

The above quote was kindly provided by Chris SSG for our sixth installment of our podcast series which features a set by him. A good friend of the collective, he needs no further introduction. This podcast is a recording of his set at the final of five parties we threw late last year to celebrate the 10 years anniversary of the Observatory. Chris’s set was the final one in a long series, closing what was a  wonderful sequence of events. Forward indeed.

For this installment, we present SBat's ambient set at the wonderful Liminal Dreams party in Tokyo (2023.12.10). SBat conjures up a shimmering dreamscape of sounds that warps seamlessly between genre and mood, guiding the listener through nostalgic rememberances, glistening electronic futures, and hazy mirages that elude categorization. We recommend getting very comfortable and organizing some proper listening conditions before drifting off (and drifting deep) into this one.

We'd like to thank the Liminal Dreams crew for signing off on our use of Sbat's set. LD has a special place in the hearts of us here at Muzan. Not only are they an integral part of the flourishing ambient scene in Tokyo, but were kind enough to invite Endurance to their very first event - and Dérive to their latest party last month! Their lineups are always incredible, with past special guests including artists like Sunju Hargun, Chris SSG, Sapphire Slows, and Jane Fitz - just to name a few. Episode 60 - CanGone but not Forgotten

Our mid-week listening session comes courtesy of multi-disciplinary Japanese artist, Makiko Iwaki, under her DJ alias, Iwamaki.

Aside from gracing the world with beautifully woven, introspective DJ sets, she performs live, and produces stunning drone and deep techno sounds under her alias, Menou. Having performed live at Barcelona’s Mostra festival, and releasing music on a string of labels, such as Orbitando, Initiate, and Accents, Iwamaki’s journey as an artist is one to keep your eyes on.

This mix is a live DJ set, recorded just three-weeks ago from MIMINOIMI at Polaris Tokyo, where she layered many sounds, and a unique fusion was born in that very moment.

London-based sound artist and DJ Jin Synth creates immersive sonic experiences by seamlessly blending ambient elements. Her artistry combines diverse textures and experimental layers into a unique sonic tapestry, using synthesizers, modular setups, and microphones to capture the world's frequencies.
