The Pearl

Founded by applied ethnomusicologist Ghazi Al-Mulaifi, Boom.Diwan is a collaborative global jazz ensemble that is inspired by the cosmopolitan Kuwaiti pearl diving music of the Indian Ocean trade. With influences spanning Zanzibar to Calicut, improvisation, fluidity, and dialog are at the center of Boom.Diwan.  

The name was inspired by two ideas:  

The Boom: is the most important ship in Kuwait. It was used for pearl diving and for merchant trade. It serves a metaphor for the musical exploration that Boom.Diwan engages in.  

The (music) Diwan: is a place where traditional Kuwaiti pearl diving music ensembles, preserve and pass on traditional Kuwaiti music. It is also a metaphor for the exchange between Boom.Diwan with other musicians; regardless of genre, style, or culture.  

We are the Boom and the Diwan.
