Moderated by Jennifer Fleetwood (Goldsmiths College), a panel including Dr Koshka Duff (Author, Abolish the Police, Lecturer, Nottingham University), Thomas Marriott (Designer and Researcher, Goldsmiths College), and Dr Nikhaela Wicks (University of Kent)focus on the use of excess force and other forms of violence that can typify interactions with private security and police forces.

In this performance Alex De Little uses a subtractive synthesiser as a tool for sculpting the standing resonances of the Oak Gallery space at Goldsmiths CCA. In the second half of the performance, a dialogue unfolds between Harry Burgess' vocal improvisation and Alex's installation.

BOOK LAUNCH — ART MONSTERS: LAUREN ELKIN

Marking the closing day of CCA’s exhibition Unruly Bodies, this walkthrough will draw on writer and psychotherapist Emily Steer’s experience of working in a therapeutic setting, exploring the physical manifestation of trauma within the body. With this in mind, her talk will consider the potential release of trauma available when the body is depicted free from its usual constraints. Steer offers a reading that when the physical form is portrayed in a liberated state, artists invite a sense of release from the forces that typically pin it down.

Drawing on the central figure of the Zombie, Karrabing Collective member, Elizabeth Povinelli, discusses the collective’s work in reference to the undead quality of settler colonialism, and the refusal of dividing lines, such as between the dead and undead, within indigenous culture. Povinelli was in conversation with author and academic Kathryn Yusoff (A Billion Black Anthropocenes or None).

Karrabing is an indigenous Emmiyengal word referring to the lowest point of the tide, an occasion for collective gatherings along the northwestern coastline of Australia, home of the Karrabing Film Collective. Karrabing is not a clan, not a language group, not a nation. It is an aspiration for a world in which Indigenous members control their lands, imaginations, pasts and futures. Over the years, and on different occasions ranging from online screenings, to public talks and large exhibition settings, writer and curator Filipa Ramos has been in dialogue with and presenting the work of the Karrabing Film Collective, attending to how their films are based on real-life events in which past, present and future are implicated in one another, and exploring the multiple demands and inescapable vortexes of contemporary indigenous life. Joining their critique of settler colonialism’s ongoing mission of domination and supremacy, she reflects on the significance of their work in its movement between situatedness and global circulation. Filipa Ramos was joined by Dr Ros Gray (Goldsmiths College) as a respondent.

During the launch of Aea Varfis-van Warmelo's latest poetry pamphlet 'Intellectual Property' at Goldsmiths CCA, writer and art critic Orit Gat went in conversation with the poet.

Intellectual Property is a series of long-form poems that propose the law of intellectual property as poetry’s dark twin — both forms task language with the burden of shaping the intangible, and both forms consider human ingenuity to be of infinite value. Weaving through a series of landmark disputes, the poems apply the laws of intellectual property to our private lives and seek to determine what constitutes an idea, and whether we can ever own one. Language’s brutal extreme is usually reserved for the law — this pamphlet explores what happens when it infiltrates poetry. Running from the Leibniz-Newton Calculus Controversy, to the Son of Sam Law, the poems deftly position the cut of the law against the inner workings of a teenage boy, and young pregnant woman. To mark the opening of If UR Reading This It’s 2 Late: Vol. 1, Tony Cokes discusses his work with Kodwo Eshun (Lecturer in Contemporary Art Theory at Goldsmiths, University of London and co-founder of The Otolith Group). Eshun features directly in the exhibition as part of a new commission produced specifically for the CCA, which quotes his ‘Mark Fisher Memorial Lecture’ delivered at Goldsmiths in 2018.
