This is from an audio-visual experiment using Apple Motion 5 instead of Adobe After Effects. The soundtrack was created in Logic Pro X. There were numerous tracks but I bounced two separately so that I could later analyse the low, medium and high frequencies that would be used to link parameter behaviours (audio) to animate the visual language components.

Post-Human is a development of a previous composition entitled End of Time (the name of the last episode featuring David Tennant as Dr Who). The themes reflect imminent or post-apocalyptic times in the face of societal collapse. Songs such as Five Years by David Bowie; films like No Blade of Grass and The Day After Tomorrow; and the 1970s television series Survivors previously articulated similar concerns. In a conversation with Ben Richards we discussed the impact of climate change and concluded that the planet would survive even if humans didn’t. This update imagines a world where machines still function without the interventions of humans – a post-human earth.

After the second pandemic lockdown a cure for the virus was found in the unlikely form of a disaccharide commonly known as sugar. The government promoted the widespread use of sweet confectionary under the slogan ‘consume candy’. A law was decreed making it a fineable offence not to do so unless medically exempt. As with many previous campaigns the consequences hadn’t been thoroughly thought through. A view that was not lost on shy dental nurse Khanda Kane. She was only too aware of the perils of poor oral hygiene, dentistry was a profession that had run in the family for generations. Her father prized her with an exquisite and unique vintage extraction kit. He held contempt for those who profiteered from the sales of what he regarded as a rotting agent. For the general public these were happy times with many outdoor parties known as sweetie streets. No-one had noticed the absence of recently furloughed Khanda from these gatherings. A new disturbing concern was emerging however, that of the mysterious disappearances of local candy store owners. Jars of red and white candy stripes were being filled with gruesome bloodied dental extractions of the missing proprietors. Who would be next to fall victim to the ‘candy tooth fairy’? The film première of ‘Candy’ is set for 23 March 2021.

Liquid Foil is an audio-visual experiment that takes the information from a packet of tin foil as a starting point. There is no great logic or meaning to be found here. You start in one place with an intention and arrive in another with the original intention modified as a result of a process. This composition references historical context such as the work Katherine McCoy did with her students at Cranbrook.

I was reading and hearing about the importance of vitamin d (the sun vitamin) to the immune system as we head into winter 2020 with the coronavirus still present. The soundtrack to this audio-visual composition is the chord d minor. The audio is produced in #LogicProX by programming software ‘instruments’ only. D is the connecting concept.
