Tracks using the Benjolin pre and post filter outputs as the only sources of sound and trigger/gates.  Sounds processed through VCAs, some under envelope or lfo control, others selected through a sequential switch.  Resultant sounds mixed on a stereo spectral mixer and the output processed by a reverb unit.

This track was created from a series of sample recordings made on my modular that were then imported into a DAW to create a sound world to be arranged and mixed before mastering in Ozone.  The track creation was based on the process that Sarah Belle Reid showed us in the From Patch to Polished course.  This track was very much a tribute to her patience and encouragement to create.

Following a demo of patching Allen Strange's Dream Machine generative patch using TipTop Audio Buchla modules at ModCaf, this is a performance of the patch that extends the patch to add some bass and percussion sounds.

Well this is an experiment in making a track where the sole source of all sound heard is white noise.  The white noise is filtered to create HP, BP and LP outputs and these are further processed by a pitch "shiftor" and granular processor supported by various trigger, LFO and envelope modulation sources, VCAs and delay/reverb effects to create the palette of sounds you hear in the track.

Oh and the cover, the original challenge was to use only white noise and a cardboard tube.  Well I have used the cardboard tube as the track cover!

“Jamuary” challenge, create a jam every day during January.

Day 28’s jam – stays with Soma Laboratory but introduces their Ether product.  Ether enables you to record the electromagnetic field that emanates from our modern world.  The Ether was used as the “microphone” to record the electromagnetic field of my modular rack and studio. I then played the recording through a delay and reverb unit to create a drone like sound where the earlier parts of the recording become layered with later parts.

Today's jam is based around a generative Krell type patch created on the MakeNoise 0-Coast modular desktop synthesizer.  The basic Krell patch has been extended so that it can be played with in real time.  A quantizer has been used on the pitch CV created by the random stepped voltage and the 0-Coast sound is processed by a Xaoc Devices Timiszoara effects module using the combo flanger delay programme.

This is one of a series of experiments with the TipTop Buchla modules.  In addition to the Buchla modules a wave folder, two sequential switches, a logic module and an effects unit are used.  One of the five sound sources, a hi hat is constant the other four sounds are selected by the coin toss and sequential switch such that none or any number of them can be playing at any one time.

When I bought my first eurorack modules, I was warned that I was at risk of going down a rabbit hole.  At that time, I did not understand what this meant but I certainly do now!

So when you think of a rabbit hole you almost certainly are reminded of Lewis Carroll's story Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. And that is the inspiration for this track, a story based on Alan's Adventures in Modularland.  I wrote the story and recorded it as a sample that plays whilst I improvise with various eurorack modules over the top to create an electronic soundscape.

The modules used include logic and random probability as a tribute to Carroll's mathematical interest.  Central to the control of the track is After Later Audio's version of the Turing Machine aptly named Alan.

Alan's Adventures In Modularland (Part 1)

It is often said of modular synthesis that you are entering a rabbit hole, something I did not understand when I bought my first eurorack modules but most certainly do now!

So inspired by Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, I wrote a short story titled Alan's Adventures in Modularland and performed it at a ModCaf meet in Aldershot in August.  This playlist comprises that performance and also three further tracks representing Alan's adventures in Modular land.

I am a retiree who has caught the modular synthesiser bug.  The tracks I upload whether experiments or finished tracks are inspired from taking the Sarah Belle Reid "Learning Sound and Synthesis" and "From Patch To Polished" courses over 2020-2022 that have opened my ears to alternative approaches to composition, sound and music.  I am not a traditional musician but an electronic musician and describe my work as electronic sound art.
