Theremin being processed live while played over fixed media. The fixed media was generated through taking segments of cello playing and spoken word, and time stretching them to bring out the audio artifacts, and then processed with added effects.

A Study On Sirens

“Insomnia”, written by Flynn Hamel, is another piece written for their series of works based on mental health. This electroacoustic, fixed media work explores the world of insomnia, and what happens when you are stuck awake. As the piece continues it becomes more and more detached from reality, with the sounds taking on an otherworldly sound. Meant to be listened to on a multi speaker setup, the ambisonic work allows you to fall into the headspace of an insomniac, taking you through the night until morning.

The end is a piece written by Flynn Hamel as a part of a series of works on mental health. The piece focuses on suicide taking the listener along with the main character, as they solidify their decision and complete the act. The work is made of a multitude of audios combined and processed to tell the story. In the end Flynn uses the train coming as a foreshadowing of what is coming, going from being abstract into a more realistic sound just as the end comes. Flynn hopes that by writing these works and showing the dark side of mental illness, and the parts no one talks about, they can help to bring about a conversation and the beginnings of de-stigmatization.

This work is about the transgender experience. It is about
the process of coming to being in a world that can be cruel,
harsh, and unloving, but can also offer some of the most
rewarding and caring relationships, full of joy and
brightness. It is about coming to terms with who you are, and
the process of fighting to be seen and accepted as such. It
is the culmination of a year of work, progress, frustrations,
love, pain, and joy. To the members of my community
listening, I hope I have created a space where even for 20
minutes you can feel seen, heard, and accepted. To everyone
else I hope you can listen, watch, engage, and absorb, from a
place of genuine compassion and an openness to feel.
