Autumn Romance / Herbstromanze - Sandra Labsch

Tapes and Topographies is US based artist Todd Gautreau, who has had music releases on labels such as Past Inside the Present, Dronarivm, Shimmering Moods and his own imprint, Simulacra. His project has been active since 2014 following his previous alias Tear Ceremony and he also produces a downtempo as Sonogram.

With each new album, Todd follows a different workflow to achieve new details and results in his sound. Increasingly, his work has been aided by the use of hardware and outboard effects.
In his latest album Amplitudes, he has taken a set of sounds and fed these through a looper, experimenting with altered loop speeds. He used FM synthesis for the first time in this body of work, alongside some of his tried and tested methods, joined by field recordings.

These nine compositions clock in at almost 50 minutes; a compelling listen through dreamy, organic textures. Todd has created a lot of music in the last 18 months and Amplitudes is the latest in his continuous process of distilling his sounds and ideas down to their essence.
The album’s artwork is a macro-photograph of a stone, as the fine details are ‘amplified’ by the magnification effect of the camera’s lens. There is not a clear concept but inspiration is drawn from film and literature, as well as self-reflection, memory, loss and dreams. As these compositions play out, you’ll find yourself concentrating on fine details, whilst at other times, in a blissful state, zooming out to absorb the bigger picture.

I made this track for a composer challenge in the OPIA discord, (challenge: make an intimate track). Made using Glass piano, vintage keys, a korg and sometimes in tune vocals. I also got a "field" recording of me doing an imaging experiment. It's been so cool playing with glass piano, I used to study listening to philip glass alot.. now I'm doing experiments and playing with his piano. so that's fun.

On April 8, 2023 (Saturday), 3/4 of the target number of songs for this project will be achieved. Taking that opportunity, I plan to change the thumbnail for each song on soundcloud. I plan to change it to an image of a Japanese anime woman that I feel is pretty good these days. It has already been used in the music video below. Please take a look if you like.

This project grew out of quiet routines early walks, empty rooms, places passed through without much notice. The music stays simple on purpose. Piano leads most pieces, with light strings or a single woodwind appearing when the space feels right.

These tracks aren’t meant to tell a story or pull attention. They sit in the background and leave room for focus, reading, or reflection. Each piece is tied loosely to a place or moment a park at dawn, a street after rain, a coastline seen from a distance small scenes that don’t ask for interpretation.

A cinematic journey into the heart of a black hole. Massive organ chords, low brass, and swelling strings move like gravity—slow, unstoppable, and overwhelming. Pulses orbit, time stretches, and themes collapse under immense pressure as the music crosses the event horizon. Structure dissolves into raw force and resonance before fading into fragile light. Epic, reverent, and colossal—this is space not as silence, but as power.
