Rani grew up in Western Sydney, and as the mother of two young boys and a first-generation migrant, she brings a strong personal social justice commitment to her work. She tells us how Australia is faring with the extent of child abuse on a national level, and whether that situation is getting worse or better. Rani explains how while there’s a better understanding of the extent of child abuse in society, there is still a long way to go before we stop it altogether, and we all have a part to play in that. She also explains why NAPCAN is calling for a national summit on child abuse.

Rani is a skilled policy analyst and advocate for children’s rights, with an extensive background in social policy and project management in the children’s welfare field both here in Australia and overseas. This experience goes right back to when she was a UNICEF Australian Youth Ambassador for Development in Bangladesh in 2011.

What is the extent of child abuse in Australia with NAPCAN Deputy CEO Rani Kumar

This is the 16th episode of Keeping Kids Safe - A Bright Futures podcast by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, featuring Bruce and Denise Morcombe.

Firstly we speak to Kathryn Fordyce, whose leadership has been described as life-changing for neurodivergent children and their families. She tells us about the particular challenges that children with disabilities face around expressing their sexuality, and what is key to addressing the unique needs of this group.
We also hear from Professor Dale Tolliday, who is an internationally renowned researcher and practitioner, and The Sydney Children's Hospital Network Senior Clinical Advisor for Children and Young People’s Sexual Safety Program - or CYPSS.
Then we go to Professor Elspeth McInnes, a sociologist with research expertise in early childhood child development and trauma. She has worked for decades researching children and families, investigating what are the best trauma informed approaches to professional learning for education and care workers dealing with these issues.
And finally we hear from Renae Pepper. Renae is a registered psychologist who is currently working in the Department of Education Children and Young People in Tasmania, assisting schools in responding to sexual harm. She’s worked for more than 15 years with children, young people, adults and families to provide early intervention and therapeutic services in response to harmful sexual behaviours.

How to best combat online sexual exploitation of children with Dr Sarah Napier

n this episode we’re going to deep dive into the results of a groundbreaking global study into sexual offending against children, which shows a shocking number of Australian men are sexually attracted to children and teens. 

Michael Salter is a Professor of Criminology at the University of New South Wales. He was lead author of this world first study conducted by UNSW and Jesuit Social Services, which surveyed thousands of men across Australia, the UK and the US. It found that one in six Australian men reported having sexual feelings towards children, and the profile of these men, may surprise you - as Michael Salter explains for us on this episode. The research revealed the prevalence and characteristics of men in the Australian community who sexually abuse children. He hopes the findings shine a light onto how to prevent adult men from becoming perpetrators of child sexual abuse.

In her almost four decades of responding to harmful sexual behaviours in children, social worker Carol Carson has seen many changes to treatment in that time.

Now as director of the AIM project in the UK, Carol is taking what she’s learnt as the most important aspect - restorative practices for children and families - and training people around the world in how to practice it.

Her extensive research is also extending into how to best respond to children on the autism spectrum who engage in harmful sexual behaviours, and the importance of a very tailored response for neurodivergent children.

Director of UK's AIM project shares 4 decades responding to harmful sexual behaviours in children

Australian author Alice Perle is a courageous voice in a growing global conversation about Sibling Sexual Abuse (SSA). 

As a survivor of Sibling Sexual Abuse herself, Alice has now written about her experiences in the book Resolve - A Story of Courage, Healthy Inquiry and Recovery from Sibling Sexual Abuse. In the book she combines her experiences with the latest scientific research showing how the problem is far more widespread than many in society realise. 

Sibling Sexual Abuse is the most common form of child sexual abuse in families - at least three times more common than incest between a parent and child. 

However discussing the topic is one of society’s last taboos. That’s something that Alice Perle hopes to change on today’s episode of Keeping Kids Safe - A Bright Futures podcast.

By shining a light on Sibling Sexual Abuse, she hopes to  prevent more children from becoming victims, as well as take away the stigma and shame that so many survivors feel, so they can seek the help they need.

Today on Keeping Kids Safe - A Bright Futures podcast for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation - we’re going to deep dive into how to help young people overcome harmful sexual behaviours.

In this episode we go to Adelaide, to the Daniel Morcombe Foundation’s Bright Futures forum, to hear the latest research from four experts in this field, and what parents and carers need to be aware of.

Firstly we hear from Alan Jenkins who has worked in the space of addressing violence and abusive behaviour for more than 35 years. He was the director of NADA consulting - an independent service that provides intervention in family abuse and workplace harassment.

We also hear from Professor Dale Tolliday, an internationally renowned researcher and practitioner, who has more than three decades of experience working with people who have sexually harmed others and was awarded an Order of Australia medal in 2014 in recognition of this work.

We then go to Dr Deirdre Thompson who is the director of therapeutic and support services at Bravehearts. She was instrumental in developing the Turning Corners program which provides early intervention for young people around harmful sexual behaviours.

And finally we hear from Dr Tessa Opie who is the founder of `inyourskin’ and an advocate for healthy consenting relationships, working as an expert consultant for several Education Departments helping young people navigate best practice consent education and preventing sexual assault.
