Artist: The Open Circle [Greyscale / Crossfade Sounds/ Axaminer / OHM Series / ODrex]

Our 17th Frontier journey comes from Belgian producer Geert Thirry better known as - The Open Circle. We have been big fans of The Open Circle since we discovered his music a few years ago. He is an incredible producer and very versatile artist, who’s music can span from deep ambient soundscapes, to low slung chuggy dub techno all the way up to full dance floor fist pumping Techno. His production is mostly done using a Modular synthesizer and some other hardware. Then Layered textures and evolving rhythms are built to define the signature style with analog warmth and hypnotic depth.  

Geert has been producing music for many years, His first EP was actually released back in 2003 on the UK label ” Lost Language “as a double vinyl. Released under the alias Karada the release was more in the melodic Techno sphere. Since then his style and sound has developed into the deep Dub Techno he is known for today. His productions have been gathering more and more acclaim with his recent release on the legendary Greyscale placing him firmly towards to the top echelons of the Dub Techno world. 

We are honoured to be able to welcome Geert to the Dub Explorations and Frontier family and look forward to hearing his future productions.

We are pleased to introduce our friend Morion, with a full on assault from his turntables!! 

He is a 90s kid with all the love for the underground techno and the ethos in a DJ mix that comes with it, Morion likes to explore the world of dark, hypnotic techno and deep industrial techno/electro through his DJ sets.

Like a nomad his sound travels through the abyss of the underground in berlin. Having performed in many clubs and endless secret never announced darkrooms since 2012, and with recent and past albums on Diffuse Reality, Subsist records, naked lunch, r3volution records, soblazn, trau-ma and Andrew Till's Machine his journey into the sprawling catacombs of techno needs to be heard.

The Quadrasphere 014 - Morion

AGP explores the depths of electronic music in all its forms. From blues and jazz to house music, dub techno and minimal. Initially sensitive to soul with influences such as Sun Orchestra, Masters At Work or Glenn Underground, AGP then discovered the work of Studio 1 or Moritz Von Oswald, as well as some dark pieces by Omar S. The contrast installed leaves room for negotiation between the explicit emotion of Nuyorican Soul's instrumentations and the abysses of repetitive tools, where the soul of House and the energy of Techno mingle. Since 2014, AGP has been signed to labels such as Lossless, Moodmusic, Get Physical, Loot, Dance Artifakts, Azzur and, more recently, Goldmin and CB90. Since 2020, he has been concentrating on his more minimalist project, “Redrop”, and on Lessenorg.net.

Every week on Thursday, he appears on Line out Radio from 6 to 8 p.m., offering his vision of electronic music, his choices, his guests and his influences. This week, he felt like testing out his contribution to a VA coming out soon on Star Dub. So expect this one to be leaning towards the deep for the first hour. Two of our favourite things at lempuyang HQ are deep techno and curry. As one of Glasgow's best exports in recent years, Chris covers both bases. He also happens to be a shithot (geddit?!) DJ and producer. Chris first came to our attention after his contributions to the always excellent OHM Series label, and he was subsequently invited onto our annual 'Pura' V/A compilation, comfortably holding his own against heavyweights such as Hydergine, W-Moon & Merv.

In addition to the above, you'll also find Chris loitering in the rosters of Mixcult, Greyscale, and we highly recommend picking up the excellent Sons of San release on Verdant.

Label Series: 01 SPATIAL Complete Works Part 1

The mastermind behind Basic Channel, Hard Wax and Rhythm & Sound doesn't do mixes. For RA.1000, he made an exception.

Trace Mark Ernestus's path, and you trace the evolution of electronic sound itself. The timeline of contemporary Berlin is unimaginable without him. At first, that meant Hard Wax, the crucial hub that shaped the early era of the city's techno revolution. Carl Craig once said it plainly: "Mark was ground zero."

From there, Ernestus never stopped. There's the birth of dub techno and the near-flawless catalogue that followed through Basic Channel and Rhythm & Sound. There's his immersion in Senegalese mbalax with Ndagga Rhythm Force. Lately, that means Open Ground the Wuppertal bunker that's letting people hear music as never before.

As part three of RA.1000, Ernestus has kindly supplied his first studio DJ mix. As you might expect, it's technically immaculate, but more than that, it feels like a substantial and generous conduit to one of the world's most vital genres.

Amapiano remains underexplored in music media. Publications like our own are still learning to keep pace with the South African sound's global pull, animating millions across the globe. 

You'll hear the range and richness of the genre across the near two-hour mix, from the gothic, percussive stomp of Caltetonic's "Bambela"  to the devotional glow of GemValleyMusiq's "Something Spiritual."

Through all of this, Ernestus has remained understated. He lets the music speak for him, with a quiet honesty that lies in decades of opening doors—creating the conditions for new sounds and scenes to flourish and carry the culture forward.

Recorded and designed a huge 2 hour mix of some of my favourite old breakbeat hardcore / rave / oldschool jungle tracks from the early 90s - beginning at rough and chaotic early hardcore and following it as it evolves and shoots off into jungle tekno, darkside and eventually the beginning of the more lush and complex atmospheric jungle sound. 

Really inspired by the incredible art of old rave tapes and hours spent trawling through youtube and discogs listening to shitty quality rips of them, still full of so much energy and urgency despite their age- like music from another dimension, lightning bottled in these psychedelic little plastic cases. Had a lot of fun using old software to replicate the otherworldy oldschool 3D look of the renders on many of these old tapes and flyers (youtube video with visuals here -  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuSpRSgFKJA) and designing for cassette for the first time.

Been sitting on this project for a year and a half now so feels good to have it finally finished, and especially fitting after just spending a year in the uk where all this music came from :]
