Die Skatspieler

Cow Low Bowl is a poem written in response to an artefact (dating to 650-700 AD)found at Cow Low, a prehistoric barrow excavated by the antiquarian Thomas Bateman. The poem was created for a collaborative project between the Universities of Manchester and Sheffield and the Peak District National Park. The poem is included in the 2022 publication from the project - Vestiges: The Past in the Peaks - edited by Dr Melanie Giles.

Cow Low Bowl

Flints is a poem inspired by the stone tools on display in cases at Weston Park Museum (Sheffield) and Thomas Bateman’s descriptions of the flint instruments he found in his excavations across the Peak District. Even suspended in cases, these tools seem to call out for a hand to hold them again. The poem reflects on these flint tools as artefacts of care, both the care that went into making them and the care with which the living placed them with the dead. It was written by researcher and poet Dr Abigail Flint as part of the Stories of Discovery project funded by the University of Manchester. The poem is included in the 2022 publication from the project - Vestiges: The Past in the Peaks - edited by Dr Melanie Giles.

This poem was written in response to a Romano-British child’s bracelet from Colchester dating to c.100 AD, as part of the Universities of Bradford and Manchester’s ‘Continuing Bonds. Creative Dissemination’ project.
