Climate change is impacting the whole world. Drought and human-induced water scarcity is by now substantially affecting several regions. Climate change has a direct impact on water availability and quality, which in turn jeopardizes social stability and younger generations economic opportunities.
According to the UN report on SDG 6 (2018), 844 million people still lack even a basic water service, and over 2 billion people live in countries experiencing high water stress. Climate-driven water scarcity has at least two major consequences. Firstly, the impacts of water scarcity on food security can force people to migrate in search of environments with more water. This is usually closely linked to other factors, such as political instability, governance issues, economic challenges and livelihood opportunities. Secondly, and particularly in regions highly reliant on agriculture and fisheries, a change in the availability or access to water and related ecosystem services directly affects locals’ wellbeing and socio-economic security, triggering migration.
This webinar will be the first in a series to discuss water-related issues. It will be an opportunity to start the discussion around decision-making and policies to mitigate some of the risks aligned with water scarcity and climate-driven migration.

Water Science Policy was born in May 2020 as a global digital platform out of a graduate cohort of the University of Oxford's School of Geography and the Environment. The worldwide lockdown made some of us reflect on the interconnectedness of our distant yet close realities. We saw it as an opportunity to bridge apparently insurmountable distances across continents, sectors and disciplines at the click of a button.
Ultimately, it motivated us to build new bonds and create a meaningful initiative that would survive thereafter. Aside from the co-founders and the core group of Oxford friends we teamed up with, most of us have never met each other in person. We are a powerful and thriving example of how passion, tenacity and technology can unite like-minded people across continents and time zones. In less than a year, and next to our full time jobs, we were able to build a flourishing magazine, a non-profit organisation and a networking platform for everyone interested in water and water-related topics.
Currently, Water Science Policy receives no funding from any source and all the expenses are covered by the two co-founders, Silvia and Chris. Since 2020, we have been spending a significant amount of time, effort and personal financial resources to keep it flowing. We rely on a global team of editors, regional ambassadors and supporters. We are all volunteers, driven by a strong curiosity about water, environmental protection and social justice.
