Lunatic Love Letters

"Point of Departure" was originally released as a ScreamTracker file in 1995. It was composed by Andrew Sega (aka Necros) - https://soundcloud.com/andrew-sega

I loved this track from the moment I heard it and have thought about covering it for a while, but never thought I could do it justice or figure out everything that was going on in the complex layers of samples and loops.

However, I was inspired after watching a breakdown by 'Beej Tunes' to try and recreate it at last with more modern tools. What Necros was able to accomplish in 15 hours with just 16 channels of 8-bit sounds took me 36+ tracks and several late nights to remake in Reason Studios 12 with mostly stock instruments, samples, and effects.

Basically, I just soloed each channel of the original .s3m file in OpenMPT, listening to the parts one pattern at a time, and attempted to create a similar sound to the original using a much more powerful DAW than existed 30 years ago. I added a sonic embellishment or two of my own, but mainly I tried to stick to the source.
