Pour ce 42 ème podcast, on est ravi d'accueillir la DJ @nataskank pour une heure à toute vitesse. Membre de l'asso Physical Tool et du collectif Unit Sœurs, Elle n'hésite pas à frapper vite et fort dans ce set qui galope bien.

Pour mieux connaître Nataskank :

1 - T'es qui meuf ?  

Salut moi c’est Nataskank, DJ lyonnaise de drum and bass. J’ai commencé à mixer il y a un an tout pile donc je suis très contente de marquer ça avec ce podcast ! J’y ai mis des sons des artistes qui représentent le plus mon univers, il y a pas mal de sorties récentes, des plus classiques et des petites tracks que j’ai chinées 😉 

2 - Des projets en cours ?  

Avec mon asso Physical Tool on vient tout juste de reprendre les évènements après ces longs mois d’interruption et c’était génial de retrouver tout ça ! C’était ma première date et je suis la première fille à passer derrière les platines pour Physical Tool. Je suis super fière car la D’n’B reste un milieu très masculin en ce qui concerne les artistes ! On a encore quelques dates d’ici la fin de l’année, des projets en collaboration avec d’autres associations lyonnaises qu’on a hâte d’annoncer.  

3 - Quelles sont tes influences locales ? 

Hormis les associations qui font de la D’n’B à Lyon j’aurais du mal à parler d’influences locales puisque le mouvement est relativement petit ici comparé à d’autres villes de France ou carrément à d’autres pays où les scènes ont vraiment une autre dimension. Je regarde beaucoup ce qui se passe en Angleterre, maison mère de la drum  !  

Si je devais citer une influence qui m’a vraiment marquée à Lyon c’était les soirées Bass reflex de Totaal Rez au Ninkasi Kafe. Malheureusement elles ont été arrêtées et c’est vraiment un regret, on avait la chance d’avoir des artistes internationaux aux côtés des locaux.  

4 - Comment est-ce que tu aimerais voir le secteur événementiel et culturel lyonnais évoluer ? 

Avoir plus de drum bien sûr ! Et plus de meufs derrière les decks. Le lancement du collectif Unit Sœurs annonce de très belles choses à venir à Lyon, il y en a pour tous les goûts et avec beaucoup de talents. J’ai hâte de voir ce que l’avenir réserve !

Hot on the heels of his highly anticipated return “Estranged” featuring LaMeduza, the West Country born/London-based Rockwell passes the mic to Lewisham-born and bred MC Novelist for his second single of the year, “Peak”. An atmospheric and ominous introduction, this club banger is defined by cheeky synth stabs and harmonic variations, increasing the intensity of the track as it progresses whilst providing the perfect sonic texture for Novelist to lay down his inimitable quick-fire bars - hitting at the government for the country's current state of affairs. A pertinent and “of the times” socio-political battle cry, Novelist raps “The price of everything is going up, I’ve had to add another zero to my fee I’ve had enough… the government don’t care about a thing, they don’t want to see or hear a brother win” whilst distant sample chimes in “The general public in this country know they are being mugged”.

“With a couple of my more recent productions, I’ve been trying to strip things back, taking a more considered approach to adding elements and ensuring that everything that makes the cut is integral to the track. I struggle to articulate how much of an honour for me it is to collaborate with Novelist on ‘Peak’, and from the recording session we did, the bars mirrored the instrumental and came together in an effortless fashion”.

Novelist is a Mercury Award nominated MC and producer hailing from Lewisham, South London. After developing his skills as a lyricist on pirate radio, Novelist went on to play a key role in the resurgence of Grime as a teenager. Nov has since evolved into a genre-bending artist who can no longer be defined by any individual scene. He was nominated for Best Grime Act at the MOBOs in 2014, and picked up a Mercury Prize nomination 4 years later. As well as continuing to release his own music under the Novelist moniker, he has produced for the likes of ASAP Rocky, Skepta, and Dean Blunt.

"PEAK" [feat. Novelist]

Drum and Bass duo hailing from New Zealand. Inertia likes to sit in the underground flavours of the drum and bass sound. Using tight drum work and placing importance on atmospheric music with stabby and gnarly basses. Having already released on labels such as 4 Corners and Yamatai - Inertia are truly starting to make their imprint on the scene.

'Trapped' is the first track of their ep 'Darkest Corners' which is their debut EP on the UK based label Phase Records DNB. This EP combines techy sounds with cool drums and sick basses to form a collection of music that truly embodies what Inertia are all about. 'Trapped' has a very memorable rhythm to it and sets the tone well for the rest of the EP. Dark flavours and cheeky spices which have your head bopping! Full release of 'Darkest Corners' is the 10th of March 2023!

Rockwell returns to his Obsolete Medium imprint for its third release - “Isolation Ritual”. Featuring the distorted crescendos and dissonant echoes of the Alix Perez supported track ‘Vent’, and ‘Ditch’ - a pulsating and dub-siren heavy collaboration with the man of the moment, Workforce. 

“ ’Isolation Ritual’ was borne out of me examining the relationship between my writing practices and my life outside music. For years I would shut myself away from the world in my windowless studio, concentrating on making music. It became normal for me to spend long periods by myself, isolated from the world outside and my friends and family. Over many years I became increasingly withdrawn and detached and struggled for objectivity. Tasks that would normally take an hour were taking days, as I was constantly second-guessing myself. My output ground to a halt.  

Making changes to both my creative process and the relationship I have with my music has been massively beneficial to my productivity and also to my wider mental health. Music is starting to flow again naturally. It is a slow process to unlearn years of bad habits, but hopefully ‘Isolation Ritual’ is a step in the right direction.”

One of the most exhilarating talents to come out fo the drum and bass scene in recent times, Rockwell has been heralded by the likes of Billboard, FACT, RA, Mixmag, CRACK and DJ Mag. He has released on some of the biggest and most revered labels in the game - Metalheadz, Critical, Shogun Audio Neosignal and Darkestral - and collaborated with a range of artists including Roni Size, Flowdan, Sam Binga and Breakage.

A past alumnus of both Radio 1’s Residency and ‘In New DJ’s We Trust’’, his debut album ‘Obsolete Medium’ was released on Shogun Audio in 2015 to critical acclaim, with Billboard selecting it as one of their top 10 Electronic LP’s of the year. 

2020 sees Rockwell continue on his mission, undertaking further sonic explorations with his label OBSOLETE MEDIUM.
