NLSM003 Derek Carr

A reference work, a body of knowledge, a record of human endeavour: this archival release of works from Arcarsenal's fertile collaboration in the period 2011–2016 is all of those things. Pressed on its two discs you will find, in the duo's own words, the 'broken flowers that needed just a little care and attention to bloom'. And exquisite flowers they are, rooted in the reduced formality of minimalism, yet prone to frequent and unabashed florescence. Ranging from their very earliest productions, made with limited gear, through to later recordings from a fully-equipped studio, the tracks move from techno to dub and house and into blissful after-hours and ambient, all with the rich and spacious imprint that is their own. Most of these tracks have been firm favourites on the dancefloor, whether played by other DJs or Arcarsenal themselves, yet this is the first time any of them have seen an official release. This 'Compendium' is a record of Arcarsenal's past achievements; only time will tell what new endeavours the two may pursue.

The Farthest Reaches Of Grandma's Handbag

This instalment of our mix series comes from the DJ and prolific producer Lerosa (@leopoldo-rosa). Leo spent his early years dancing and playing in the clubs of late 80s Rome before moving to Dublin, where he has lived ever since. In the early 2000s he began releasing records on respected labels like D1 and Uzuri, establishing early on a reputation for finding elegance in simplicity. In 2009, I had the pleasure of seeing Leo play a liveset in Fabric room 1, while a decade later he DJed at the 2019 edition of Lisb-ON festival here in Portugal.

Since the first lockdown in early 2020, Leo's life has revolved around making music, interrupted only by his day job and his two cats demanding to be let in and out of the window of his home studio in Killester. Recent releases - including his Kiss Me Again EP for Welt Discos - show his love for italo, dub and Giallo soundtracks (among others), as do the clips he uploads almost daily to his Instagram.

Leo's mix focusses on a selection of studio producers he's been following closely, be it for the final sounds they achieve or the methods they use along the way. Our discussion of these producers became a jumping off point for a broader conversation about the creative process and what it means to be an artist - the challenges, the joys, the insecurities and how, in the end, the best approach is to simply carry on 'doing'.

The French city of Montpellier has long possessed an obsession with all things electronic music. At the forefront of this scene is Yamen & EDA.
Friends since childhood, the pair possess an almost telepathic understanding behind the decks and in the studio, a way of working that’s brought them to the attention of some of contemporary house and techno’s most renowned imprints and dancefloors.

Having officially kicked off as a duo in 2011, Yamen & EDA’s ascendency has been an impressive one. Theirs is a story however, that goes much further back. Raised on a solid musical diet of minimal house and techno, the pair’s formative years were spent on the many dancefloors of the south of France, experiences that still inspire their music to this very day.

Best friends and ardent musical lovers with a penchant for similar styles and techniques, it was only ever a matter of time before Yamen & EDA solidified their friendship through music. Quickly getting down to business in the studio, their inaugural releases hinted at great promise, eventually bringing them to the attention of One Records boss, Adam Shelton. Always keen to foster fledgling talent, Shelton has signed numerous Yamen & EDA releases to his imprint and even had the boys join him at One Records showcases in London at fabric, Sonar in Barcelona and at Below in Birmingham.

The relationship is one that’s since brought the pair to the attention of numerous other labels, with Earlydub and LAATE among those who’ve housed their talents. What’s more, their music has been played along the way by some of the scene’s foremost players, with Raresh, Petre Inspirescu and Apollonia all lending their support. 

2018, however, is the year that Yamen & EDA are set to go it alone courtesy of their own Maison Mere label. A vinyl-only affair that kicked off recently courtesy of the auspicious ‘Retrospect’ EP, the label promises to promote a wide range of contrasting electronic sounds. “A platform to collect and release music without any limits”, it’s indicative of an altogether exciting new chapter in the already emphatic careers of Yamen & EDA. With further releases to come on John Dimas’ always on-point Elephant Moon label as well as a return to One Records in the works, 2018 already looks set to be a defining year for one of France’s most exciting duos.

Next up for our Sesssions podcast is Colombian producer & DJ, Craftsmanship. We premiered his track ‘Just Cruising’ off his That Girl EP on Miura Records a couple weeks ago and we needed to hear a mix.

Craftsmanship began his dj career at an early age in his hometown Cali and later relocated to Medellin after taking a long break. There he began his journey as a producer and connected with fellow artists Camilo Do Santos & AFM. This led to opportunities to play in Medellin’s top nightclubs such as Salon Amador, Calle 9+1, Club 1984, and Mansion Club.

Craftsmanship’s sound whether it be his productions or dj sets draws influences from the blues, jazz, hip-hop, and lofi. You’ll find his releases on Pogo House Records, Inhale Exhale, Hustler Trax, theBasement Discos, and other labels. Now residing on the white sandy beaches of Cancun, Mexico, he is fully dedicated to his craft and passion, house music.
