Q. How would you describe yourself?
A. I'd like to think I'm a music enthusiast who enjoys diving deep into the early "golden" years of dance (and chillout) music.

Q. How long have you been a part of the Melbourne music scene? How did you get involved?
A. I've been playing records around town since about 2006, and started running some parties with a few friends shortly after that, back when electro house and fluro tees were the hottest ticket in town ;) A few years later me and my friend Andy Hart discovered there was this whole other deeper side that we absolutely loved and started the MDC series. Somehow it's still going after all these years!

Q. Tell us a little bit about this mix.
A. After being locked down for most of this year, I wanted to channel the kind of vibes I would go for if given an opening set outdoors somewhere on a sunny afternoon among friends (hoping this won't be too far away now as things start to open up here!). The mix starts out slow and soulful and gradually picks up the pace with lots of 90s chillers and summery house nostalgia to get you in the mood. Thanks for listening and I hope you enjoy!

To an international audience, NIKS might be best known as one of the cofounders of Black Artist Database, but she's also an incredible DJ. And public speaker. Over the past few years, through a mix of activism, thought and DJing, the London selector has created an all-encompassing approach to her artistry that centers dance music, social justice and an endless desire to uplift those around her, especially Black artists.

Through Black Artist Database, NIKS has created a resource to support Black artists from around the world. What started as a spreadsheet called Black Bandcamp has become a fully-fledged platform with editorial, mixes and, of course, the powerful directory of artists that started it all to begin with.

Outside of that, NIKS curates panels, hosts and gives talks and DJs. Her RA Podcast is inspired by a specific night she played in Manchester, but it's also a wonderful snapshot of her style, connecting the dots between Drexciya and Octave One, Nicola Cruz and Seth Troxler, Lyric Hood and James Bangura, and an electrifying section that weaves between tracks from X-Coast and X-Press 2. It's as thoughtful and intentional as everything else she does, an hour-and-a-half in the world of one of London's brightest stars.

Trushmix 61: PLO Man

Sydney's club scene is thriving right now, and it is in no small part thanks to the likes of Adi Toohey. Her 360 degree approach takes in DJ sets, a long running radio show on FBi Radio, work behind the counter at The Record Store, and her own parties with the Rimbombo crew. All this has set her on an international trajectory that has seen her play as far afield as New York, Berlin and London. Her sound is accessible but high quality, with emotive house at the root of it all. 

Her mix for us makes no bones about that - it starts with some smooth and warm vocal grooves before a distinctive 90s flavour takes over. The mixing is tight and efficient, and breakbeats, progressive and big rave chords all colour in the bold, hands in the air grooves to make this a perfectly party starting set that wears its heart on its sleeve.
