One of the tenets we founded this podcast and everything we do at Tearsheet – our reporting, conferences, awards programs, even our new Working Groups – is honesty. Honesty in what’s really important and impactful to you, our listeners and readers. It’s why we don’t use language like “revolutionary” or “seamless”. This stuff isn’t easy to get right. I’ve been in the rodeo long enough to see fads come and go with no lasting impact. We actually see it as one of our jobs – being able to distinguish wheat from chaff, sizzle from stake – to help you focus on what’s really important and tune out the rest. Remember the hype around chatbots a few years ago? Or crypto? Certainly we weren’t there before, but are we there now? How do we even think about quantum?

I’m joined by Mastercard’s president and CTO Ed McLaughlin today. I wanted to ask him what he thinks about three particular trends and sets of technology. Specifically, how do we size up the impact on payments of AI, quantum computing, and crypto? You’ll hear Ed’s deep experience in product and tech and how one of the senior most professionals in financial services can cut through the hype to find opportunity in cutting edge technology, focusing his and Mastercard’s resources on what will be impactful now and in the future. In the course of our conversation, McLaughlin provides some frameworks about how to approach new technology in an honest way and. I appreciate his honesty around his process and his sharing of his impact assessment of new technologies.

Welcome to the 96thedition of INDIERE, your hosts for this Radio Show are Sonia Morales and Rafa Sánchez together with technician Nuria González from Onda Local de Andalucía (EMA-RTV) in Spain. In this first edition of the year, our radio show showcases some of the newest bands on the Spanish underground scene. New year, new blood.

We start with El Clan del Sur and their fusion of styles (electric-ska-rap) and then bring the latest single by Dejotamodo, MC of the Hermanos Bastardos crew. We also talk about the solo debut of Alonso, leader of the band Napoleón Solo, who hits the road with the song ‘Soy un humano’ (I'm a human).

On this occasion, we interview the young Sevillian artist Celia's Sensitive. She talks to us about her career, her particular vision of music and her future projects. And to round off the talk, we present an exclusive unreleased song that will be part of her future EP.

Our cocktail shaker also brings rock with a sixties feel thanks to the music of Santa Fe and a touch of darkness with the new wave sound of Crisisgrado. We'll shake these ingredients well to prepare ourselves for the decibel rise of the show’s ending.

The grand finale consists of the guitar-driven post-grunge of Hell of a Mind, the ironic alternative rock of Amiga 500, the post-hardcore of Cuerda Huida... and the party of madness proposed by the industrial metal of Soulbreak. A thunderous finale to get us ready for the year ahead.

The value of Art and times of social upheaval

In this episode Professor John Paul Ricco from UofT Mississauga’s Department of Visual Studies talks about his art and art history research, and also about how past health crises have shaped art movements. We also talk about some of the ways in which this current pandemic may influence artists now and in creations to come, and what kinds of things John Paul is doing in this time of solitude.  

John Paul is an art historian and queer theorist whose interdisciplinary research, teaching and writing draws connections between late-twentieth-century and contemporary art and architecture; continental philosophy; and issues of gender and sexuality, bodies and pleasures, pornography and eroticism.

He graduated from New York University where he majored in art history and minored in Medieval and Renaissance Studies. After a couple of years lecturing for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, John Paul went on to complete a PhD in the Theory, Historiography and Criticism of Art History at the University of Chicago. During his doctoral studies at Chicago, Ricco was a Graduate Exchange Scholar in the School of Architecture at Princeton University.

As a young scholar in the early-1990s, John Paul contributed to the formation of three newly emerging fields of study: Gay and Lesbian Art History, Visual Culture, and Queer Theory, and he was one of the first scholars to bring questions of space, geography and architecture to bear upon the discourses of queer theory and the politics of AIDS.

John Paul joined the Visual Studies department at UTM in 2006.
