DJ set

This mix is indebted to Andrew Weatherall. It’s a nod to both his familiar and lesser-known sonic sides. I hope the mix is something he would enjoy listening to, with new songs to discover and signature tunes spread throughout. We could call it a tribute to (or perhaps more honestly, a rip-off of) an undeniably defined sound.

But was it? Weatherall would be the first to reject this premise, even if we know it to be the case that his sound was recognizable far beyond the average musician or dj's reach. But perhaps by 'sound' we really mean 'style,' for no one could argue - not even the man himself - that on this he remains unrivaled.

Weatherall refused to be predictable or risk being put in a box, on principle but also quite naturally: if ever he felt pigeon-holed, he wouldn’t “change musical direction, just sidestep.” He was an artist in constant evolution, impervious to the rules of others, and I am inspired by his mind just as much as I am his methods.

As a self-proclaimed underachiever, Weatherall took a stance against ambition throughout his career, in subtle and not-so-subtle ways. The sidestep lifestyle hinges on this ethos, and from it emerges a clear channel for creativity - with originality at its source.

This mix is an ode to the underachievers, the anti-ambitionists, the sidesteppers. Never forget, as the man himself once said: if you ever find yourself climbing the ladder, it’d be best to jump off before you’re halfway up.

Ambient, techno, house, breaks, future bass, and IDM,The mix may have been inconsistent due to the variety of music packed into it.However, I wanted to show that Japan has people who make great electronic music, so I tried to make the mix as smooth as possible.

A Journey of Japanese Electronic Music w/ vcfox 271224

Washington D.C. artist soso tharpa explores the theme of intimacy for the latest instalment of Untitled 909's mix series. With questions like 'what does it mean to be intimate? Does intimacy thrive off curiosity? At what point does curiosity end and intimacy begin?', soso tharpa throws conventional mix formulas out of the window to create a session that flickers between the challenging and the bliss, floating through the bass-heavy soundscapes of dubstep, dub techno and some wonked-out techno moments including a personal favourite Mike Parker track.  

This contrasting element of chaos and balance is something that is found within soso tharpa's productions too, like his most recent release 'Fistful of Shells' on Nervous Horizon. The six track EP released in September last year drew influences from bass, techno and IDM and unfolds like an ever evolving journey, continuing to discover new ground as you listen through. Noting DJ EZ's Boiler Room as one of his most formative musical experiences, this moment led soso tharpa down a rabbit hole of bass and garage music, citing that 'something about that swing and micro-riddim spoke to me'. This influence can still be found across his productions, releasing his first track for a Bon Appetit Records compilation in 2019, as well as tracks  on Future Times, Rhythm Section, 1432 R and Human Pitch. Being nestled within the small music community of Washington D.C. has allowed soso tharpa to create a sound of his own, nurturing a slower approach to his output and appreciate every artist that comes through the city.

A true disciple of the arcane interplay between music and the body, they craft sets that induce captivating physical reactions.

Beyond the turntables, sadsugar is known for quietly working to create genuinely inclusive, caring spaces within electronic music in Bristol (and beyond) that don’t require associations, affiliations or a buy-in cost. 
This can be seen and experienced via 'Longthrow Radio' (gone but not forgotten), and 'Side-Eye,' a current project that provides space for those often found excluded from the dance floor, by not only providing representation in the booth, but also by ensuring a safe, welcoming, space to unravel.
