Animistic Beliefs - MERDEKA

With their profound take on electronic music, Animistic Beliefs have steadily solidified their spot in the global underground. Influenced by cultural concepts such as ancestry, animism and mythology, as well as the languages of political techno, punk, bubbling and IDM, Linh Luu and Marvin Lalihatu consistently translate their visions into sensitive productions as well as high-octane live performances. On their new record, MERDEKA, the artists explore and embrace their cultural heritage in all of its pride, pain and complexity. MERDEKA symbolizes Animistic Beliefs’ breaking free, coming to terms with their changing selves and letting go of external expectations. The record rethinks childhood memories, confronts the generational trauma left by (post-)colonialism, and re-connects Linh and Marvin – respectively of Vietnamese-Chinese and Dutch-Moluccan descent – with their formative cultures. 

MERDEKA marks their first step in an overall departure from western club music. For its layered sound, Animistic Beliefs once again draw from the past, present and future of global club music, creating a sonic space where fast techno, warped breakbeats and ambient soundscapes make way for the augmented influence of (Southeast Asian) tribal music. 
The record incorporates Indonesian scales and recordings of 
the Tahuri (a wind instrument made out of a conch shell), Totobuang (Gamelan-like gongs) and Tifa drums, known as ‘the Moluccan heartbeat’. 
There is no audible distinction between old and new, between organic and digital, between instrumentation and voice. 
It is through words that the artists further touch on their experience; To Dream About Water opens with a stirring spoken word fragment by Marvin, marking the first time his voice is recognizably featured, whereas Khi Minh Gap Lai (‘Until We Meet Again’) centres on a Vietnamese poem by Linh, in which she beseeches her ancestors and finds a safe haven for unanswered questions. 

In true Animistic Beliefs fashion, MERDEKA will set fire to sweltering clubs and (sleepless) dreams. Yet, for the artists, it is essential to amplify the stories that spark that flame and keep it burning. 
The release of MERDEKA follows CACHE/SPIRIT, their ongoing collaboration with visual artist Jeisson Drenth, which extensively explores the artists’ intersectional identities. As such, the latest album is the next step within a bigger, introspective investigation. More unapologetic than ever, MERDEKA embodies a turning point on Animistic Beliefs’ ongoing journey towards self-acceptance – fuelled by the sound of urgency.

'SWEETZ' is a mixtape by Kuya Neil, a Filipino-Australian electronic producer based in Narrm (Melbourne), Australia. The project is inspired by Davao City's Budots and blends 2000s Filipino hip hop, R&B, and pop melodies with juke, footwork, EDM and techno sounds.

'SWEETZ' is the older sibling to Kuya Neil's 2018 release, 'BARRIO TRAX', and continues to celebrate Original Philippine Music (OPM) in the global club context.

'3X' sets the pace and intention of the mixtape, with blaring siren synths, rapid-fire kick drums and chopped vocals. ‘Put Your Hands up’ and 'Facebook (interlude}' riff off the distinctly sentimental and pop-friendly melodies in 2010s Pinoy RnB and hip-hop, while ‘It’s My Life’ takes a more aggressive approach to the Budots blueprint, with a guest verse from Sydney underground rap affiliate BAYANG (tha Bushranger). ‘Let’s Go’ closes out with emotional guitar leads, EDM plucks and a classic Nu-Metal vocal sample, showcasing Neil’s genre-bending and world building approach to dance music production.

@fourthworldmusic is a Warsaw-based DJ and radio host. A music nerd since his teenage years, when he got a broadband internet connection. He received his musical education at Soulseek and Rate Your Music University. One of the founders of the Laboratorio Tropical collective, he also hosts a show called Fourth World Music on Radio Kapitał. One of his main fascinations is Brazilian music, the latest forms of which he presents during the Serce Baile Funku series of events. Durante noviembre y diciembre de 2023 se organizó un círculo de estudio en el que leímos, pensamos y platicamos sobre disonancia social, ensayo escrito por Mattin, artista y músico vasco que trabaja teórica y prácticamente con el ruido y la improvisación. En dicho trabajo, Mattin da cuenta de un proyecto teórico-práctico que explora y analiza los procesos de alienación o enajenación que entretejen nuestras vidas. En particular, de uno de los efectos centrales que estos provocan en nosotres: la disonancia social, una “disonancia cognitiva a nivel estructural que tiene que ver con las contradicciones entre los valores que se promueven en las democracias liberales: la libertad individual, la igualdad, la democracia y la sostenibilidad, y lo que realmente hacemos, que es reproducir un sistema basado en la explotación, la desigualdad, la falta de libertad y la destrucción de la tierra a través de su extracción para obtener beneficios.” 

Así pues, el ensayo constituye una extensión teórica del concierto-partitura que Mattin presentó por primera vez en la documenta 14 (Atenas y Kassel), un performance donde el público se convierte en un instrumento para revelar y explorar el ruido de la disonancia social que genera en nosotres la modernidad capitalista y sus contradicciones. A lo largo del texto, se analizan temas como la estética del ruido, sus potenciales críticos, los procesos de alienación que nos atraviesan desde arriba y desde abajo y la desnaturalización del sujeto como "yo" propietario de sus experiencias.

Esta pieza/montaje radial, elaborado desde berlín, madrid y ciudad de méxico durante los meses siguientes a ese encuentro, continúa la reflexión y praxis en torno a la disonancia social a partir de un diálogo con su autor que partió de algunas preguntas clave: ¿a qué fenómenos apunta el concepto de disonancia social?, ¿cuál es la relación entre disonancia social y lo que experimentamos y comprendemos usualmente como libertad? ¿cómo ha impactado el momento histórico que atravesamos en la concepción original de la performance de 2017? ¿cómo reconfigura la disonancia social la dimensión estética del noise y de la improvisación? ¿cómo calibrar la disonancia social en el caso de los sujetos políticos que actúan con arreglo a una razón cínica o a una lógica negacionista —es decir, aquellos sujetos políticos para los que el capitalismo no es un problema, sino un medio para ejercer la dominación y la acumulación de poder—?, ¿la pérdida del potencial disruptivo de estéticas como las de la música noise o la improvisación libre tienen un correlato en la pérdida del potencial transformador de algunas formas de teoría política y crítica?
