As well as engaging in live performances and performance art projects – including his famous "Dial-A-Poem" project – the record label wing of the platform released over 40 records featuring music and poetry from Laurie Anderson, Philip Glass, Meredith Monk, Allen Ginsberg, John Cage, and William S. Burroughs and more.

This month’s journey winds upward through the deserts of North Africa, across Sudan and Palestine, and northward still into Lebanon. Along the way, I’ve gathered sounds from both Eastern and Western Europe, with echoes reaching as far as Japan, Jamaica and Brazil. The pace runs a little faster here, the BPM is bit higher in this one to carry me through these final weeks of summer, sweet and fleeting, filled with moonlit gatherings and the first whispers of cooler winds.

The Early Bird Show w/ Jack Rollo 171025

Travelling back to Beirut in the late 60s and early 70s for an hour of obscurities from the city's underground guitar band scene. Influenced by US and Western garage rock, beat and yé ye acts, Lebanese groups like The Cedars and The News blended these international sounds with local rhythms, and sang English lyrics with an Arabic slant. 

Many of these records are difficult to find, being recorded cheaply and in minuscule runs in the era immediately preceding Lebanon's descent into a 15-year long civil war.
