The summer air is thickening for Customs’ third Outsiders episode - a Dub Special.

Favourite local store, The Little Record Shop, picked up an All Time Great dub sound system collection recently. The bones have been picked, the fires have been lit, the finest Jamaican VGs put on the platter. It’s a 60-minute selection sourced mainly from the UK’s rich dub culture.

As Mad Professor said, this is music that has “a way to make you feel not so cold”. So roll down the windows for this one and turn it all the way up.

Introduce yourself?

Hi there ~ I’m Jesse. I live in LA, run a label called Motion Ward, walk dogs, love food, make music with my friend John, DJ from time to time, and love my friends and family. Music is a way of developing emotional closeness with people for me :) 

Where did this gig take place?

This gig took place in Turin, which is in northern Italy right next to the Alps. The venue was a DIY space run by Misto Mame Collective and affiliates. About 9 people pay for the space to be able to operate monthly, and the feeling of community there is really strong and sweet. It was a highlight for me on this recent tour I did. Also really loved the people ❤️

What did you drink as you played?

I had one beer and water lol, and at the very end someone brought me a glass of red wine :) Was trying to minimize the amount I was drinking so I didn’t have to go pee, but eventually I had to loop a track and bolt to the bathroom :X (can you spot the moment?) 

Favorite moment in the mix?

Probably when it starts to escalate after the first few tracks ~ it reminds me of when the energy that night palpably shifted and felt like the dance floor was turning into an amoeba 🦠

Having become first recognised in the late 80’s and 90’s as one half of production team “The Unabombers” with Justin Crawford, Luke over the years has shown to be a master in all genres be it Balearic, to Brazilian to E soul, House, Disco and Techno, you name it! With his Worldwide FM show over the years gaining a cult following Luke has gained an even more of a broader crowd from his curation of his E Soul Cultura compilation series via the label Mr.Bongo (Both comps topping our EOY lists in 2022 and 2023). This exact vast taste (that is displayed in these compilations) is very much pummelled into this five hour journey of a mix like a piece of clay and sculpted into a fine piece of art. Formed in Sheffield in 1977, The Human League started as an experimental, post-industrial synth trio. After key members left in 1980, Philip Oakey rebuilt the band with two teenage vocalists, shifting towards the more charismatic (and commercially viable) new wave sound that thrust them into the mainstream. Their 1981 album _Dare_ and the hit “Don’t You Want Me” went on to define early ’80s electronic pop.
