Kourtney, aka Rose Kourts, is a Brooklyn-based DJ, party-starter, and dance floor fixture hailing from North Carolina. She’s made a name for herself with her dynamic sets and the infectious energy she brings to her performances. She plays from the heart, encouraging listeners and dancers to go on a journey of movement, connection, and emotional release through her signature blend of crunchy, funky, groovy, hype, and hypnotic selections. 

She can regularly be found setting off Brooklyn’s dance floors - performing alongside luminaries in house and techno, throwing events, collaborating with fellow local artists, and putting out label and radio mixes. She is a co-founder and resident of Sweet Kicks, a community-focused DIY party with sounds straddling house and rave, and of In Bloom, which centers around the joy of blooming forth on a pulsing dance floor. Additionally, she is the mastermind behind a NOW compilation-inspired party of feel-good music that brings unpretentious, nostalgic favorites to the club.

ARTIST STATEMENT:
In the strictest sense, Amen! Vol. 1 is the result of more than a year’s worth of obsessive brainstorming, digging, planning, arranging, re-arranging, and countless discarded takes. And in another sense, this mixtape has been in the works for the six years since I started DJing, the ten years since my baptism as a teenage club rat, and for my entire life, which for better or for worse has been shaped by The Church and church music since birth. 

My mother was a promiscuously Christian divinity school dropout who pushed my family through a run of increasingly conservative churches: Unitarian, Episcopal, Baptist, Presbytarian, Charismatic-Evangelical, and probably a few others I forget. My fathers family on the other hand were career scientists and committed atheists who also all happened to sing in church choirs for fun. I cannot remember a time when Beethoven, Bach, folk hymns, old negro spirituals and gospel were not playing in my house, day in and day out. 

Cutting ties with both family and organized religion in my early teens left a void of community and belonging that wouldn’t start to be filled until my first experiences with clubbing (sometimes with drugs, sometimes without) years later. And when I started collecting records years after that, I gravitated heavily towards any music incorporating the familiar imagery, themes, musical motifs and language of church (especially Liberation Theology) which remained kind of bittersweetly comforting long after I stopped trying to believe. This might sound heretical, but over the last several years “gospel” has become much more of a feeling to me than a genre or even a sound. As far as I’m concerned, the rave, the club, the congregation, the choir, are only different ways to experience a many-sided mystery. 

For this project, I wanted to challenge myself to imagine going beyond just using a little soulful house to end the night or the mix on an uplifting note, and instead program a fantasy “gospel rave” for a thousand of my closest friends dancing in a field on a moonless night. How would I do my best to deliver a powerful, meaningful, salvatory collective experience from midnight until sunrise? Amen Vol. 1 is a snapshot of that imaginary night. 

The need to use contrasting peaks and troughs to create a sense of narrative for your audience includes emotional or spiritual contrast just as much as it does changes in BPM or a kick pattern.  So, it was important for me to try exceeding simply the emotions associated with “praise” music (like joy) because encountering the truly divine should also inspire fear and awe. Disregarding genre as much as possible, each piece of music was chosen for the sensation or sentimental meaning it inspires for me personally: you probably wouldn’t call most of them “rave tracks”, and plenty aren’t explicitly religious at all. Finally, of course I had to make sure that Detroit and Chicago were properly (but not exclusively, that’s for another mix) represented in the tracklist. Where I’ve ended up, grounded by a repeating classic “anchor track” for each side, is an attempt to simulate Genesis and Revelation, the Good News and the Flood, the dark night of the soul and the moment of salvation–whatever those might mean for you. LA-based Canadian artist Jessy Lanza has brought dance and pop music together and elevated both art forms in the process. At the heart of her work are her own sensual vocals. They bring human warmth and emotion to vibrant and uptempo grooves and result in music that is both energetic and accessible yet personal and honest. Next to critically acclaimed studio albums for Hyperdub, she has made a fine entry into the DJ-kicks mix series and toured solo from Asia to Australia. Europe to North America. Her latest album is her broadcast and boldest yet - Love Hallucination features work from producers such as Pearson Sound, Jacques Greene, Tensnake, Paul White, and Jeremy Greenspan and conforms Lanza to be out in a class of her own. 

Lanza brings her feel-good vibes to the podcast series this week, not least with a couple of her own exclusive new cuts as well as one mysterious known gem early on. They add up to a perfect representation of her sound - the first half is a feel-good mix of retro-future boogie, glossy 80s r&b, party-starting funk bombs and many more irresistible moments of pure heat from Brenda and The Big Dudes, Debbe and The Code and Gino Soccio. Things then turn more towards the dance floor with deep house from Frankie Knuckles, bass-heavy rhythms from Addison Groove and a piano banger from Mall Grab. Jeffrey Sfire’s introduction to the underground dance scene and illegal warehouse parties of Detroit occurred at the tender age of 15. This escape from suburba led him to some of the city’s most talented DJs and musicians, who soon exposed him to a new culture of creative riches. Learning by example, Sfire’s taste and skills as a DJ developed naturally and he soon began playing out at parties, clubs and sleazy gay afterhours, usually entering covertly through back doors or with a fake ID.  A move to Chicago exposed Sfire to a whole other side of dance music history, including "Italo Disco" and genre jumping dj styles of the Hotmix 5 radio djs. He spent afternoons digging through record store crates, meeting retired DJs and developing his musical palette. Having held numerous club residencies, he regularly plays at Cocktail D’amore and Panorama Bar in Berlin, The Carry Nation and Wrecked in New York, Hard French in San Francisco, Honcho events, and his own party Club Toilet and Loosen Up in Detroit, consistently offering a finely-tuned selection of Acid House, Italo Disco, Latin Freestyle, & 90’s NYC House. In 2013 Jeffrey and SOPHIE released the first untitled “Sfire” record on Cocktail d'Amore Music out of Berlin which has become a cult classic. Since then the duo has released 3 more untitled “Sfire” records. He is currently living in Detroit and is one half of the Italo/Electro duo Looky Looky with Ian Clark released on Dark Entries records of San Francisco.

People in Los Angeles usually remember the moment they first saw Colored Craig DJ. He cuts a memorable figure: throwing down records on the turntables and dancing like he's in the crowd, not behind the decks. He's one of those rare selectors who's almost as fun to watch as he is to listen. But the rest of the world should be listening. Over the past few years, Colored Craig has become one of the LA area's most in-demand DJs, not just because of his considerable skills, but because of his old-school, loved-up ethos. He plays classic house records with a verve and style that you can't really teach or learn. You just have to have it.

A choreographer by trade, everything about Craig has to do with movement, the joy of it, the energy you both gain and lose through dancing. His RA Podcast, recorded in his living room (a sort of nightclub in itself) gets across the infectious, uplifting energy of his sets, blazing through tracks from Kerri Chandler, Masters At Work and Chez Damier, and even including a disco house track that samples the Price Is Right theme. You might call this sound nostalgic, but it doesn't feel that way coming from Colored Craig, who is obsessed with the now, and the power of the moment. That outlook is all over this mix, and with any luck, you'll be hearing and watching him DJ around the world outside of LA sometime soon.
