Cuban experimental band founded in 1969 by Alfredo Guevara, president from the "Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos" (ICAIC) to experiment with new sounds different from the typical folklore sounds of previous Cuban music. They were part of the Nueva Trova movement that emerged in Cuba in the late 60s.

Spring is barely on the horizon here in Ontario and we’ve been in a strange slushy stasis for the past few weeks. To help focus on warmer days my longtime friend Aaron Levin has put together a melter of a mix featuring 100% Canadian dance music from the past and present. Despite currently residing in Oakland, Aaron is no stranger to Canadian music and spent years at the helm of Weird Canada, a website, archive, and distributor passionately devoted to homegrown Cancon of all stripes. I’m thrilled to have Aaron on the show and his mix has helped shake off the winter doldrums.

Existing at the intersection of free jazz, acid folk, spoken word and avant garage rock, ESP-Disk opened for business in New York City at the zenith of 60's counter culture. 

The label's first release was an Esperanto album, giving it the name ESP-Disk, and then released a number of free jazz albums that we would now consider classics. It soon came to champion other similarly less-commercial genres, always giving free reign to the artists.
