In the 1970s, artists from Réunion and Mauritius began fusing island styles - Maloya and Séga - with psychedelic rock, funk, and soul. 

Séga, rooted in Afro-Creole rhythms and often sung in Mauritian Creole, developed as a celebratory dance music drawing from European, African, and Indian influences. Maloya, native to Réunion, originated in enslaved Malagasy and African communities - a slower, percussive style traditionally performed with vocals, kayamb and roulér, and associated with ritual, resistance, and later, political activism.

Christine Renée, a sonic storyteller and American expat, curates themed sets and occasionally interviews a variety of sound artists on her show FOR THE BIRDS. She's collected records since the '90s and DJed since the '00s. Renowned for her residency at Lot Radio (2016) and role at hi-fi club Public Records as head curator (2019), she's now studying sound as a healing modality.

The aim of "RELIEF" is to bring together different music genres and sound textures, to explore notions of (a)synchronicities and flow, the dynamic potentialities of the one-hour mix format, to create a narrative that is literally in relief. Considering “errors” as opportunities, RELIEF navigates between poetry, experimental music, field recording and the dancefloor. RELIEF plays on the two meanings of the word relief in French and English: on the one hand, relief is that which stands out from a surface - the sound wave being like a landscape - and on the other, it is a feeling of relaxation after great stress.
