Finger in many pies, Venning can be found operating right at the bleeding edge of electronic music. DJ and producer to label manager, A&R and promoter, expect the tongue-in-cheek, explorative and playful in equal measure when he’s involved. 

He’s also co-founded two brilliant labels: @tobago-tracks, where pop-leaning sensibility typically meets experimental tendency, and @all-centre-504822953, an imprint that quickly established itself as a go-to destination for mutant dancefloor fare. Vital stuff. 

Spanning rapturous bliss-out, avant pop, dive-bombing shoegaze, dembow beatdown and boundary-pushing dancefloor trax, this one isn’t to be missed.

You’re blessed to be hearing the long-awaited Lovefear debut album, live and listenable courtesy of TT.

‘Schema’ is a work of deep focus, a slow-spiralling plunge into a zone of enhanced awareness. What unfolds is crisp yet hallucinatory, like the HD visions of some hyper-advanced biomechanical life form animated by psychotropic research chemicals.

‘Mother Null’ and ‘Red Thought’ render images of flickering holograms on gleaming glass architecture; 360° interfaces and synthetic neuro-inputs. There’s an air of gradually realised tension and unease, a sense of something uncanny at the core of the cybernetic sheen. But Sydney Bass honcho 3NDLES5 lays down a human touch, his impressionistic spoken word flow on ‘Inner’ conjuring smeared metropolitan light pollution and the romanticised blur of half-remembered late night transit.

And then there’s ‘Macro’ and ‘Swan Cross Antonym’. Flurries of accelerated consciousness, a mind operating on evolved firmware. These are aerodynamic flow-state tunes, cold-blooded bangers pulsing forward like quicksilver through veins. But ‘Economy of Ascent’ brings it all down to an introspective simmer — because for all its screen-mediated gloss, ‘Schema’ is deeply felt, not calculated.

pi pi pi premiere: Lovefear - Great Age (TT)

The first vinyl release from Doyenne Books via Boomkat Editions arrives as an anthology of love song covers - release date: 11th April 2024.

Taking its name from the etymology behind the well known myth of ‘Aphrodite’, meaning: “sea-foam", "risen from the foam" - the fifth release from Doyenne brings together friends, lovers and the broken-hearted under one premise. The commission was to make a ‘love song cover’, in which each artist has had free reign in the interpretation of ‘love’ as well as the style and rendition of their favourite musical pieces on love: Agape (unconditional love), unrequited love, philautia (self love), lost love, mania (obsessive love).

From bygone sea shanties to 90s r’n’b, post-punk, jazz greats, indie pop and 19th century classical, Doyenne label mates Christina Vantzou, Susu Laroche, and Spivak, are joined by a diverse cast of friends new and old. Alex Zhang Hungtai’s deconstructed cover of Sinatra sits beside Aya’s darkened Lovesong, whilst Claire Rousay, Wild Terrier Orchestra’s Jay Glass Dubs and Dania Shihab of Paralaxe Editions take on soft vocal covers of iconic alt bands. Manchester’s Teresa Winter does British folk, and South Korean duo Salamanda rework Debussy.
