Australian Kia very quickly rose up through the grimy after-hours rave scene of Melbourne to make her mark on the international stage. Now Berlin-based, her unique grasp of rhythm is rooted in a love of bass, IDM and deeper techno though she is adept at exploring a wide range of moods within those worlds. She has done so at places like ADE and our own festival and extends her good taste to the curation of her Animalia imprint and its ambient sub-label Cirrus as well as her own original tracks on Nous'klaer Audio.

In this week's mix, Kia showcases a colourful and kaleidoscopic take on techno which she says was awakened by an early trip to Japan's famously head Labyrinth festival. It's a hi-fidelity feast of supple rhythms, icy synths and deep space ambiance that unfolds in late-night fashion. The melodies are as delicate as silk, the drums rubbery yet punchy. It's high-paced future music that manages to be as delicate and beautiful as it is dynamic.

Settle is one of the founding members of the Locked Groove collective in Brooklyn, and developed her characteristic sound on that dancefloor. A versatile DJ, her sets often span techno, house, and breaks. In this mix, she hones in on her dub influences, gradually building from downtempo rhythms to stripped-back dancefloor grooves. The sensual, atmospheric journey was recorded during an opening and is perfect for home listening.

From a ravey, Blade Runner-esque start, flowing into an old-school ‘90s Love Parade rave clip, this set is unadulterated techno at its finest, kicking into hammering blocks and punchy transitions at an escalating tempo. Picking up speed, it’s one of those relentlessly groovy sessions that keeps you guessing at every turn of the mix and with each choice of track. Sharp thunders shape the vibe: body-shaking techno with top-notch technique. A superb 360-degree selection of vocals (spot the Easter egg mid-set), leading into warehouse echoes, UK garage, dub, and jungle. Multiple moods: euphoric, full-on, piercing, hypnotic. For this set I played on 4 CDJ 3000’s and a V10 mixer, using both of its internal effects processors. For every No Way Back set, and for most sets, I try to prepare new hardware remasters and edits of things that I think would be fascinating recontextualized in this setting. But for NWB, it is even more special, a peak moment, so I try to have new records I’m working on in the studio to test out. For this set that means the hardware mixes I’ve been working on for Torrvo and for Andy Toth can be tested, I’m working on this hardware mixing and remastering tone palate, so I spread that to some edits to give them a whole new power. Playing at No Way Back cannot be put into words, though we try every year, it really is inexplicable without experiencing it. It’s the environment you most want to be in, the space is totally transformed, the sound is dialed in, the audience is so ready, very giving and open, and the feedback you get is incredible. People are up for a ride – we start at the Tangent and end up going to the other side of the universe. Freedom within and without. There’s no place I’d rather be, so I thought I’d share this much sooner than we usually do. Enjoy the ride.

Verraco delivers a set of ultra-futurist club productions sitting at the intersection between 'industrial perreo + jungle revivalism x mental drum&bass' on his Bleep mix. In a first half which maintains around 100 bpm, the Colombian producer/DJ swirls together industrial-strength perreo, technoid dembow rhythms, soundsystem techno wallops and twisted breaks. The effects are searing, with recent favourites from the likes of Slikback, Lurka and Low Jack all rubbing shoulders in this section. Verraco subsequently ratchets up the tempo significantly for the mix’s latter stages - breakneck junglism and IDM are the order of the day here, though the indefinable, highwire percussion innovations of Rian Treanor and Donato Dozzy also get a look in. It all combines for a thrilling and unpredictable mix expertly put together.
