Originally hailing from Lisbon, Portugal, transmedia artist @gadutra is a multifaceted creative whose work dances along the fringes. A DJ, cultural curator, and tattoo artist, Gadutra finds space in the counter cultures of the cities she explores. Currently based between Berlin, Lisbon and Rio de Janeiro, Gadutra’s sound research is deeply influenced by baile funk, ambient, footwork, noise and latin core. Her dance floors invite spectators for moments of contemplation, freedom but also in a sweaty and groovy environment. This passion and investment in the underground has seen Gadutra establish the forward thinking TroubleMaker Records, a BIPOC and LGBTQIAPN+ focused label that, since 2018, has released emerging marginal artists, events and music in Portugal.

Journalist, ethnomusicologist, and DJ, Maïa wears many hats as long as the topic is music. He is one of the curators of FUNK.BR - São Paulo, a project that reflects his decade-long work with baile funk artists from his hometown, whether he's writing for media outlets like The Guardian or Rolling Stone, DJing, or researching the paredões sound systems. 

For this special series, Maïa has curated an overarching selection of baile funk, fleshing out the early years of this music genre and its various iterations. It's a 90-minute journey through the baile funk world, interspersed with informative drops that help the listener understand more about this music, which is not just a genre but an idiom.

Hailing from Capão Redondo, the same neighborhood that gave birth to Racionais MCs—arguably Brazil's most important rap group—Pablo is a staple of the city's street parties, the bailes, with tracks like "Bota na Pipokinha" making waves on both the favela soundtrack and Brazil's top charts.

In his first tour abroad, Pablo made a stop at the NTS studio to walk us through his baile funk world. Beware: it's full of echoing, strange horns, dry, stomping kicks, and fresh takes on all-time São Paulo funk classics like "Bonde da Oakley."

DJ and mother of the vogue house Casa de Babilônia, Majestade expands the funk realm into the ballroom universe. Her mixes are powerful performances that blend baile rhythms with crashing a-ha beats, macumba rhythms, and high-pitched bubble pops.

With a set titled "Bruxaria Brasileira," Majestade delves deep into the bruxaria dialect: a dark take on baile funk that reimagines a macabre world for São Paulo, a dystopian nightmare soundtracked by thunderous 4x4 kicks and blasting melodies.

And yet, she was not born in the capital city. Vitória was born and raised in Santos, a coastal city that was the first hotbed for funk in the state of São Paulo. 

In this mix, the DJ digs into the vaults of Santos' funk, shedding light on a short yet relevant generation of MCs that paved the way for São Paulo baile.

A founding member of the National Front of Women in Funk (FNMF) and a dancer and funk teacher, Renata Prado wears as many hats as she wants, especially if they're under the funk category. This multidisciplinary artist and intellectual is among a fierce generation of black and young people shaping the future of funk beyond the dancefloors and streets. 

For the NTS São Paulo Funk series, Renata has curated a special selection of baile funk tunes that tell the story of this music genre in São Paulo from the perspective of female artists. She adds a level of context to her selection with her voice and thoughts, creating a sort of funk sound piece that can be followed in English below.

The first DJ set of the platform is commissioned to Kontronatura, an artist based in São Paulo, Brasil. Part of the Mamba Negra crew, he stands for a pillar of the metropolis' queer rave scene, enabling space for trans* bodies on the decks and on the dance floor. 

Kontronatura's sound is focused on percussive, hypnotic and fast-paced beats with historically black roots – Dancehall, Kuduro, Baile Funk, Techno, Bubbling House, Global Bass, among others. He takes a liking to breaking expectations and messing with the listener's imagination, believing that the dancing body is free, looking into the dance floor as a power to purge colonial violence. As a transmasculine person, he understands his body as politically activated in response to the lack of representation in a scene, to which trans bodies have little or no access. Along the past year, as a resident of one of the biggest underground parties in Brasil (MAMBA NEGRA), Kontronatura travelled around the country, Latin America and Europe presenting his sound in events such as Kode (RJ), ODD + Bassiani (SP), Universo Paralello (SSA), Banana Frita (AM), Masterplano (BH) , Hiedrah Club de Baile (BSAS) , Bahidorá (CDMX), Herrensauna (BER), Fusion Festival (BER), Tought Act (MCR) Club Raum Pride Festival (AMS) and more

His mix is accompanied by artworks by Ygor Alves, a brasilian artist based in São Paulo, working with digital art and painting. In his work, he deals with themes such as fear of death, loneliness and nature.
