I recently read "Gifts of the Crow" from 2012, pretty neat book if you're into Corvidae - tldr: they're as smart as a seven year old human child and not only more adept users of tools than primates, they are capable of multi-step processes to create their own tools to solve complex puzzles - and they demonstrate a complete "theory of mind" which is to say metacognition, ie they can follow the gaze of a person and make calculations based on what they think you are thinking
