My name is Alec Hamilton. I run pleasure gallery which is mix series and radio show. I also put on music nights here in Bristol, UK. 

> q. is there a story behind the mix?

I wanted to make something quite tender and introspective. I chose tracks that I’ve spent time thinking, wandering and musing to since I first got into electronic music. I’m a big chess nerd and recently watched an old documentary about Garry Kasparov, former world chess champion. I enjoyed how it explores the theme of human vs machine, so I thought I’d throw in some excerpts from it for some extra spice. 

> q. what's the best way to enjoy your mix?

I think it suits time alone, a long journey to see old friends or a lazy Sunday. 

> q. describe a favourite object in your living room...

My friend bought me a signed photo of Jason Statham as a housewarming present. It's so ridiculous but I love it, probably the weirdest gift I’ll ever receive, creates a lot of laughs. 

> q. are you working on any projects right now (music or not music)?

I held my first pleasure gallery event a few weeks ago and I’m looking forward to hosting more of those.

It makes sense to kick off this TRACK PREMIERE with a quick [re-]introduction to Malcolm Pardon, who, although appeared on these pages as a solo artist with his debut album Hello Death (The New Black, 2021), may be more familiar to you as one half of Roll The Dice, along with Peder Mannerfelt. Unlike the Swedish duo's gorgeous sonic onslaught that captivated these pages (see In Dust and Until Silence from over a decade ago), Pardon's solo musings are more in the vein of deconstructed melancholia, with the solo piano progressions held up by cinematic atmospheres and themes. "Like the romantic notion of the orchestra on board the Titanic playing their repertoire as the ship went down, on The Abyss, he looks past the bleak or macabre to observe death as a multi-layered, lifelong acquaintance." On "Side Effects", we are faced with a pseudo-neutral message of a neo-classical nature, at times evoking echoes of Radiohead, at others creating a false sense of optimism, with a darker undertone lurking just beneath the veil. This becomes more evident as you progress through the album, followed by "The End", landing upon "Enter the Void" (you can check out an unsettling video by the Swedish director Oskar Wrangö here - be warned that it includes images that some viewers may find distressing), and finally concluding with the "Aftermath". The music on The Abyss is celebrating our demise, and just like the distressing notion of your own inevitable passing, it is disquieting, beautiful and final. For now, enjoy the "Side Effects".

Madelyn Byrd (they/them, b. 1992) is an educator, musician, DJ, and worldbuilding practitioner based in Berlin. Their creative and educational work implements decolonial, hydrofeminist and queer ecology to investigate possibilia and the “sympoietics” of co-becoming to promote synergistic social transformation beyond human-centred perspectives. Byrd fosters a deeply collaborative, interdisciplinary spirit to deconstruct and reconstruct the perceptual realm, weaving field recording, intricate sound design, spoken word, and somatics. Madelyn holds a Masters in Neuroaesthetics from Goldsmiths, where they researched the impact of collaborative imagination on measures of connection and hope in social praxis art. They teach critical theory + music production courses on sonic worldbuilding with Soundial. They are a current resident in Zurich University of the Art’s School of Commons (SoC), 2025 with collaborator Lou Croff Blake to develop their project, Chimera.

@slowfoam is Byrd’s all-encompassing, genre-defying music moniker. They create speculative post-human dialogues and para-worlds, sculpting a/biotic textures from electroacoustics, field recording, feedback, granulated synthesis, drones, and spoken word. Their playful sonic tapestries are spatially triggered and adapted to deep-listening environments, clubs, and everything in between. They have performed and toured extensively, including recent performances at Subbacultcha (NL), Cafe Oto (London), The Lab (San Francisco), Morse (Tokyo), and Morphine Raum (Berlin). Their discography has been published on Somewhere Press, Mappa, and Jungle Gym Records. Slowfoam is a former resident at Internet Public Radio, where they curated their monthly show, Our Tomorrow. Their work has yielded features on Bandcamp, Electronic Sound Mag, DJ Mag, First Impressions, Pitchfork, Boomkat, The Wire Magazine, and Futurism Restated.

It is such an honour to present the next Deep Mind Music mix, made by one of my favourite artists: tarotplane. 

I first came across tarotplane’s music through a YouTube recommendation, and was immediately captivated by it’s semi-lucid faraway haziness, at once feeling both timeless and nostalgic. I was keen to find more of this amazing music and learn about the artist behind it. I started chatting to tarotplane on Soundcloud, and he kindly sent me much more of his music, I can only recommend going away and listening to all of it to experience it firsthand. It covers the breadth and wonder of what ambient music can be, at once transcendent, beautiful, and mystical. 

I feel so grateful that tarotplane has made a mix for Deep Mind Music, as his music and philosophy about music really embodies what this is all about for me. His addition to the series is a stunning visual journey that seamlessly ties together music both new and old in a slowly evolving, texturally rich, emotional narrative, taking you far far away as it unfolds.

tarotplane says about this mix:

“I don't DJ very often. I really do enjoy it when people are nice enough to ask me. What I like about it is that you can really explore the odd and unexpected relationships between different pieces of music. Sometimes its the actual notes themselves and how they play off each other. Sometimes its texture, sometimes its emotion. I don't let tracks run that long as as general rule because I am always searching for these moments. I think of my style as "action ambient."

When I am putting things together, I am always looking for that 30 seconds where 2 different tracks join together to make something really new. It's always a guess whether it will work or not, but when it does it's a fantastic feeling. It's exciting to put these tracks into new contexts. "
