What is Locomotion?
Locomotion is about DJ artistry, the creative process & storytelling with music. Every month, I invite someone for an all-night b2b DJ set and we go on a journey of spiritual grooves & futuristic rides, making you move like crazy. 🤪

The long set time allows us to play long tracks, not shying away from those 8-12min tracks, moving through emotions & genres like there are no boundaries🚂

Casual P - Subtle Radio - 23/09/2024

When Wat Anders (“Something Different”) on ‘Omroep Zwart’ asked me to play I started thinking what’s the story I want to tell in this short 45min.

I wanted to play ‘Song & Stories of Resistance & Celebration’ and play a wide variety of percussive grooves from all over the world. Highlighting how music travelled the world. I chose the songs I played because the shine a light on something that’s often forgotten when hearing this music. The context isn’t always there to understand, especially if you are, like me, a guest in these cultures.

The context I tried to present is that of Capitalism’s past 500 years & it’s relentless attempt at extracting resources, often with little to no regard to human rights or our shared humanity. These resources are talked about in these songs, from sugar (cane) & rum to name one combo but Belgian chocolate, rubber from Congo, coffee, even aluminium mines in Surinam & Lithium mines in Congo, tobacco from Cuba or the Coca leaf from Colombia.

These resources, their supply chains and industries have wrecked the world with its effects felt to this day. The economy in the west would not exist without alcohol, sugar, or oil. We are addicted to them on an individual and societal level. I think it’s important to be aware of these powers at play when we listen to the music & learn about the history of the cultures, people & countries they’re from. 

It’s the story of Creole cultures in the Carribean with a shared background in West Africa. For example how Yoruba rhythms can be found in music from Puerto Rico or Haiti. Congolese rumba in Cuban music or Gwo Ka from Guadeloupe.
The, sometimes ancient or spiritual, rhythms are fundamentally human and are what connects us. Most of us have 2 arms & 2 legs. Music is our shared language. It’s the language of our body, that (in my opinion) existed before spoken word. The drum was the first word as Ron Trent says in the first track. Our way of connecting across cultures. Travelling in time or space without actually having to move.

I have quite a collection of records (& books) now. Around 2000. A sort of archive or library that contains a lot of information. I want to open it up more to the public by sharing more about the music I love so much, not just in my weekly mixes but maybe read you some liner notes or share some insights in video format.

Recently I’ve been sharing some reels & tiktok’s
with little insights about these cultures. (yes i’m on tiktok now - never thought this would happen but the algorithm works better than instagram’s) I hope you learn something or I spark your curiosity in some way. Music has done this for me so I hope I can return the favor and pass it on :)

I’m genuinely curious what you think of the mix because it’s something I’ve never done before. I start with a track that includes this message above (Ron Trent - The Clan Speaks) & move up in bpm all the way to 160bpm playing deep & spiritual house, Gqom, percussive techno, Uk Afrobeat, Haitian Carnaval, Bouyon, Soca Chutney Jazz Rave, Rumba, dub/reggae & much more.

Omroep Zwart - Wat Anders 3FM - DJ Tracksuit

Pete Blaker is the man behind a bunch of magical edits which made their way in to DJ Harvey's record box and lit up the worlds best dancefloors including Barbarella's and Pikes Ibiza throughout summer 2019. Mercury Rising attendees will be familiar with the sensational edits of 'One Of These Nights' and 'You Don't Fool Me' which provided moments on the dancefloor to remember. 

I am chuffed to have discovered him and even more thrilled that he agreed to do a mix for the blog! Fans of Harvey are in for a treat with this one. It's packed full of house, disco, balearic, progressive, and electronica treats!
