after 5 years of getting to a place where I could really embrace the life of walking my own path to the beat of my own drums while being able to support myself through my art and creative projects and going on year 3 of moving back stateside to New York -it ironically came to a point where I decided to take a “dayjob” again rather than to sell myself short to circumstances and people that exponentially perpetuates to exploit the essence and the livelihood of an artist. As someone who finds the construct of days, the way we codify and quantified the life we experience to be counterintuitive to our existence, and considering the love and passion that I have for life and creating - the hard work it took to get to this point- this was a really difficult decision to make but needed as I needed to take the time to disconnect so that I can reconnect to myself 💖.

For part of the time I was still. Instead of creating, trying to get booked, or playing gigs, I observed, processed, listened, rested, and reflected. On rare occasions I created, played gigs, or went out to support/dance to my friends and other artists like I used to. I spent time slowing down and being okay with it, being in the moment taking it day by day. The rest of my time I worked at my new day job. I took it seriously and made the best of it but it was toxic. After some time, it came to a point where I was feeling so much resistance from my life as if the universe was telling me that I needed to go back to doing the things I was meant to do and loved.  

The day I quit my job I sat in my studio and went through my records that I haven’t given love to in awhile, music created from friends that I loved but had forgotten about, and the music I collected during these times, keeping in my mind the experiences and the emotions I felt these days leading up to this summer of changes and moving forward and I pressed record. 

I wanted this mix to exhibit the way I navigate my life and my art making; psychedelic and expansive - genuine, playful, and honest, deeply connected to the senses.

I started the mix with a piece that was made by my friend Dasom, using Korean traditional instruments, her voice, and looping techniques to compose this beautiful piece that I felt captured the essence of Han. Coming from Korea, Han is a big part of who I am. A complex emotional concept that has no english equivalent to explain its meaning, Han is ambiguous and highly subjective. Theologian Suh Nam-dong described han as "a feeling of unresolved resentment against injustices suffered, a sense of helplessness because of the overwhelming odds against one, and an obstinate urge to take revenge and to right the wrong—all these combined".

For me, han is all of these things yet it's passive; not seeking revenge but instead it carries a deep understanding and hope that injustice will be righted through change and transmuting the negative experiences and emotions into an opportunity of growth, inspiration, and creation. It's the essence of the soul that drives the artists in all of us. From there I let my intuition take the wheel and attempt to tell a story of the journey I’ve been on through my selections.
