Ocean People stands for a lifetime of musical exploration – and a pandemic reinvention.

Growing up far north in Helsinki, Sampo aka Ocean People fell in love with hip hop and DJing at the age of 13. A decade later, as DJ Anonymous, he was sharing bills with De La Soul, The Roots & Common. He was also traveling to play cities across Europe. Tours later extended to Asia & North America – first NYC booking was at beloved & long-gone APT.

A childhood spent with hip hop stimulated a voracious appetite for adjacent sounds. By 2000, Sampo had partnered with friends to start Lifesaver, a specialist record shop. It was popular with locals and visitors alike. J-Dilla, Moodymann and countless others all dropped some hard-earned €€€ there.
He was also falling deeper in love with disco, house and their intercontinental variants. This was a personal revelation, as it led to a full appreciation of collective dance floor joy. It is also the origin story of Ocean People.

The idea existed dormant for years, as Sampo focused on business outside the DJ realm. In the isolation of the pandemic, inspiration struck hard. This resulted in a new course of musical action, under a new pseudonym.

Since then, Ocean People has built a shared home base called HRD Underground Workshop. It's a purpose-built IRL space that explores co-operative action and high-fidelity sound. HRD also streams curated live recordings on its Soundcloud platform.
In the booth, Ocean People aspires to always deliver timeless, emotive dance music, weaved into expansive narrative arches. No matter the setting, collective joy remains the singular goal.

Coloring Lessons Mix Series 061: Ocean People

Native to New York, musclecars is a DJ / Producer duo consisting of Brandon Weems and Craig Handfield. As musicians, they equally share an admiration for the artform. Their desire to blend genres and express their appreciation for music is focused around their community- the end goal is to bring people together. Through a regular stream of high quality mixes, they have begun to turn heads in underground circles.

In 2018 they launched ‘Coloring Lessons’, a party that was aimed to add value to their city’s nightlife culture. While the party and sound is not genre specific, it is heavily focused around house, disco, jazz, and soul, embracing the musical elements of their black and brown ancestors. The monthly party's intention is to bring New York City's dance music scene back to what it was during the golden era of NY nightlife. They aim to spread the music that has been influential to them, and share it with a younger generation of their peers.

" Julion De'Angelo is a multi-instrumentalist, producer and DJ raised in North Carolina and based in Detroit, MI. Playing bass, cello and drums across many genres, from free jazz to metal, to noise and punk, has fortified De'Angelo's musicianship and cultivated a constantly evolving sound rooted in the Black American experience. With a steady stream of releases, De'Angelo has cemented his ethic as an adventurous sonic innovator both celebrating and pushing beyond the dancefloor with fearless and moving compositions. 
His acclaimed debut was a joint EP with Thomas Xu, "Roots That Talk" released on the legendary, Sound Signature label in 2017. He introduced the world to his genre defying rhythms and unique percussive exploits on "Stand on Your Square" for Tone Log. Collaborating with Viola Klein, he crafted two remixes for Meakusma, offering hypnotic, Detroit flavoured meditations grounded by Afro Cuban drumming. His 2021 EP for Japan’s Freedom School Records presented an experimental and playful sonic exploration that begins on the dancefloor and ventures out into freeform Black experimentation.
 Over the last 3 years De'Angelo has solidified his position as a world-class selector, worthy of carrying the Detroit torch. He has recently DJ'd at renowned venues and events such as Boiler Room, Meakusma Festival in Belgium, Tresor/Globus Berlin, The Hydra at Printworks London, Nowadays NYC and Underground & Black Detroit, contributed to iconic parties like Music Gallery, Black Music and Roots That Talk, alongside radio sets and mixes featured on esteemed stations such as NTS, Hor Radio, Kiosk Radio Brussels and Lot Radio. Forever connecting with his roots, he actively engages with African, Afro-Cuban, and Puerto Rican drum & dance troupes, fostering community connections and cultural exchange.
De’Angelo’s 2023 EP for his label, Maybee Hill Music, reflects his ever-evolving pursuit of fresh sounds and musical exploration. De'Angelo continues to make an indelible mark on the world of music as he challenges conventions and reshapes the sonic landscape with each electrifying performance, impassioned collaboration and distinct composition, honouring the transformative power of Black expression and pushing it forward."
