Here is proof that this is not just a rumor. Van Houten's infamous hit song from 1986 actually existed, and an instrumental version has just resurfaced after being seemingly erased from history for almost 4 decades.

Can I Borrow A Feeling 1986 rare instrumental version

When I was a little kid in the late 1980s and early 1990s we only had one channel on the TV. And every day at 18:00 there was a half hour with childrens programming. This programming slot always had a recognizeable vignette at the start. Around Christmas time they sometimes changed the vignette to one that was specific for the holidays. A few years ago I suddenly stumbled over it online, and despite it being at least 30 years since I had seen it or even thought of it I remembered everything. I am an incredibly nostalgic person so it was a strong experience. I also remembered the music from it very vividly. It was a simple melody with piano and acoustic guitar, and it fit the pictures very good. I think this was also the period in time where I heard Oxygene IV for the first time. I remember being a little kid, sitting in front of the radio and thinking "this must be what space sounds like". I had no idea what it was, who made it or where to find it in order to hear it again. But I never forgot it. And in 2007 I finally found out. A few weeks ago I suddenly thought it would be fun to recreate the old song using some of the same instruments (in VST form) that we hear on Oxygene, and here is what we ended up with. The thumbnail picture is a screenshot from the vignette. It is made with the Eminent V 2.1 reaktor ensemble, Minimogue VA, Rhythmus, Tal U-NO 62, Polysix, Tapeotronic and Replika.

Way back when

I found an old battery operated keyboard in the closet. It is called Superb Sound Nightingale EK-680. It has a hilarious drum preset called samba.  We also have an old Eminent organ that has a heavenly string ensemble. So I thought that I could try to make something using only the samba drums and a few presets from the eminent. The sounds that are used are the string ensemble on both the upper and lower keyboards both with and without sustain, the string setting on the bass pedals, and the reeds with modulation on using only the lower tibias. The effects are some simple reverbs and delays. And a Behringer VP-1 phaser pedal.

This thing is pretty much a homage to some of JMJ's old songs.

Eminent Solina F 217

A few days ago I rediscovered a Reaktor ensemble I found earlier this year. It is called Eminent-V. It is a very good emulation of the string ensemble from the Eminent 310 organ that also has an inbuilt phaser, delay and reverb. You can also adjust the envelopes on it (which I don't think was possible on the real 310). I have an Eminent at home (although not a 310) but I'm such a lousy keyboard player that it is nice to have a midi version of this sound.
I wanted to do something with the Eminent-V, and the Eminent sound is so distinct to a certain frenchman that I ended up making some sort of a homage to a few of his tracks. It was very fun to make.

I also used the Superwave Equinoxe and P8, Tal Noisemaker and Elek7ro II and Elektrostudio Rhythmus.

I have tried to make some music again. This is a track based around a feeling i get from a part of Tokyo called Akihabara.
I have no idea if it is any good but it was very fun to make.

I have hardly made any music at all the past year. But sometimes when I have some leftover time and need to distract my brain a little it is fun to open up Live and pretend that I know what I'm doing.

DEMO Cal Look

A track that was made in 2017. It is based on an impression I got from the Yasukuni shrine in Tokyo. It is an amazing place.
My music isn't amazing but it was fun to make it.

Sometimes I pretend that I am a musician. It never turns out the way I want  but it is very fun.

Most of the sounds you hear here comes from VST instruments that try to mimic the old synthesizers from the 70's and 80's. And most of them are freeware.
You can also hear an old Eminent organ and a Gibson SG.
