We were honoured to spend some time talking to Professor Jess Deighton, Professor of Child Mental Health and Wellbeing at University College London and Director of the Evidence Based Practice Unit at the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families, about the role schools can play in young people’s mental health, about school-based interventions, and some insights from her latest research.

Jess talks about why schools are such an important setting in child and adolescent mental health, and the roles they play, and how well equipped schools and teachers.

Jess details some of current intervention programmes that support mental health and well-being in school pupils, what the research shows, and highlights some of the important studies and findings.

We also hear how to translate research into practice, how to go about embedding good mental health across school communities, and what more can be done to support teachers and school leaders in creating mentally healthy schools.

This podcast, with Dr. Alice Jones Bartoli, focuses on school behaviour difficulties, school based interventions and inclusive education. Alice is a Reader in Psychology and Director of the Unit of School and Family Studies at Goldsmiths, University of London, and Editor in Chief of the British Journal of Educational Psychology. Alice’s work uses interdisciplinary methods to focus largely on school behaviour and mental health across a child’s school life.

Alice’s look at how well equipped schools and teachers are when it comes to dealing with child and adolescent mental health issues, and what more can be done to support teachers and leaders in creating mentally healthy schools, and in supporting the staff themselves.

She discusses her portfolio of translational research working with schools to develop intervention strategies that work for students with complex and chronic difficulties. Much of this work brings together education practitioners and associated third sector organisations with psychology and neuroscience researchers. Alice explains why this multidisciplinary approach so important in translating research into practice to help embed good mental health across school communities.

In this podcast, we are joined by Dr. Ann Ozsivadjian, independent clinical psychologist and visiting senior lecturer at King’s College London, and Dr. Penny Williams, consultant speech and language therapist at the Evelina London Children’s Hospital.

Ann and Penny set the scene by explaining the difference between self-harm and self-injurious behaviours in the context of autistic children, and provide insight into how common self-harm is in autistic people, as well as what is currently understood about why autistic children and young people self-harm.

In addition, Ann and Penny discuss whether there are certain situations that can act as triggers, how parents can help to reduce these stressors, where parents can get help for an autistic child who is harming themselves, and what support can they expect to receive. We also hear about nonverbal strategies that can help when it comes to self-injurious behaviour.

02_03 Franjo Ivankovic_Optimization of Self- or Parent-reported Psychiatric Phenotypes in Longitudinal Studies

Dr Jane Gilmour talks about the new ACAMH series 'Inside the Teen Brain'.

Jane is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist (Hon) at Great Ormond Street Hospital, and Course Director for postgraduate child development programmes at University College London, where she lectures on neuropsychology, neurodevelopmental conditions (Tourette’s syndrome, autism, OCD) and therapeutic issues. She has published numerous academic articles and chapters on these topics.

Her media presence, commenting on young people’s well-being, includes appearances on BBC TV, BBC radio and broadsheet press commissions.

How to Have Incredible Conversations with your Child (co-authored with Dr Bettina Hohnen) is her latest book. Using an innovative format, families use the book together in a shared experience to strengthen communication skills and their relationship.
