Intro to Electronic Music Travel Learning to Paris, France

I attempted to emulate the open sounds and “creepy” feeling conveyed by many tape pieces involving modified human speech, such as “Thema—Omaggio a Joyce” (Luciano Berio), by including repeated clips of voices slowed down to different extents. In addition to these voices, I included clips of traditional instruments (organ and church bells). This instrumental aspect, especially the bells, was inspired by the inclusion of frog chirps in John Cage’s “Williams Mix,” although I included long, continuous clips of the instruments and Cage had many rapid jump cuts between different recordings of the frogs. Finally, I was inspired by different aspects of earlier electronic music pieces, but I kept my own preferences at the forefront. I enjoy tonal, flowing, continuous music, so I included long, only slightly-modified clips of tonal instruments with the more-modified voice and other tracks playing a supporting part in the piece.

My piece features the sounds I enjoyed the most or found interesting from our Paris trip. All sounds were recorded while in Paris, but some are edited (not all, minus the occasional normalizing). Samples include a child singing in the crypts of the Pantheon, an organ playing, an American choir singing in the Notre Dame, noises heard on the metro, a trumpet warming up in the Musée de la Musique (whilst a man who spoke little English tried to tell me to “put my bag [on my chest rather than on my back),” clips from “Le Cylindre Sonore,” and other noises from restaurants and the streets of Paris. A number of sounds are reversed and most are edited or filtered in some way. The piece ends in the same way it begins: with the sounds of a train, although the ending train samples are reverse of what is heard in the beginning.

When we think back on our experiences, good or bad, they’re distorted. An experience that once was “the best time of our lives” is now suddenly not-so-great, and the bad memories only get worse. Yet for the memories that are in between, we only remember the glimpses of what we didn’t quite see, the sounds we didn’t quite hear, that thing that we didn’t get the chance to do, along with all the treats and new discoveries. This piece is dedicated to those memories in between.

Give 'em the 'ol Chant Clap by Teona Council

This musique concrete piece includes sounds that depict the progression of child to adult. It begins with the voice of a small child, followed by sounds of climbing stairs, luggage on gravel, traffic, and subway noises. The tail end of the piece includes the sounds of musicians. Throughout the piece, there is low-volume ambient noises as well as bird recordings, panned to different ears. All sounds used in this piece were recorded in Paris, France.
