Tɔɔ Réo is a traditional Lyélé song from Réo, Burkina Faso. Sung in Lyélé with balafon, calabash, and hand drums — no modern instruments. Just the voice of an elder, the village's response, and the spirit of the 21 market day. It’s the word that makes us move.

I went to do some field recording at a traditional Bon Odori festival. I learned that it started during the war, as a way to entertain the children who had been evacuated to that area where there wasn’t much else for them. Even in terrible times, people still found it in themselves to care for others and to begin something. And the fact that it went on to become a local tradition—that’s something truly remarkable.
