	Today`s topic comes from my friend Souya. It is about how American students learn Japanese! 
	Most American students who learn Japanese start at the college level. Some students that live in higher income communities or communities that have a sufficient Japanese population can learn Japanese in middle school or high school. 
	I started learning Japanese when I was 20. I took classes at my college. We used the textbooks Genki 1 and Genki 2 for beginners and the textbook Tobira for intermediate students. We had weekly kanji tests of about 10-15 kanji. For speaking and grammar we had a dialogue test where we had to memorize a script. We also had fill in the blank tests for new vocabulary and grammar.
We also had the opportunity to be language partners with a Japanese foreign exchange student; but most the time American students just speak in English with them.
	Our college heavily encouraged American students to study abroad in Japan. The students who do study abroad often have way better Japanese skills than those who do not. 
	However, it takes a lot of effort for American students to learn Japanese. Many people quit in the first couple of classes. Those who continue to study, immerse themselves in Japanese and Japanese culture, and actually go to Japan are often the only ones that become fluent.
