The one-stringed Dan Bau is Vietnam's most famous musical instrument, which is of purely Vietnamese origin.

Dan Bau has no frets and is plucked with a bamboo pick held in the right hand, while the outer palm touches the string at appropriate points to create harmonic sounds. With its soft, soothing sound, Dan Bau is suitably used in serene aural surroundings. Formerly, it was the instrument of choice for Xam singers. Gradually it became popular in Cheo orchestras, and then Tai Tu orchestras, even used in poetry readings and solo performances.
