The HILO series – High Impact Libraries Online - will showcase and explore the various ways school libraries operate to support learning and teaching through online systems and programs and online strategies and tools. Each session will explore a different area of the online school library offering examples of practice from experienced speakers.

This session will explore – 

Free Online Tools
This session will consider free online tools.  Specifically, tools that aid, support, or enrich any aspect of school library programming or operations. They must be free and openly available. 
We will hear from two speakers, one from a primary perspective - Raffaela Grasso, and the other secondary - Camilla Elliott.

Empowering Youth with Sustainable Literature
Dr Kasey Garrison (Charles Sturt University)
Environmental Sustainability is a cause our students strongly support as evidenced through their active participation in federal election protests earlier this year and the School Strike for Climate Change. In the school library, we can empower youth by integrating titles with sustainability topics into our teaching. This presentation shares some recent and relevant books that align well with the curriculum and also makes connections to key ideas within the Sustainability Cross-Curriculum Priority.

Dr Kasey Garrison is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Information and Communication Studies at Charles Sturt, supporting students as the Children’s Librarianship Specialisation Coordinator and instructor in the Master of Education-Teacher Librarianship. Her research focuses on social justice in the school library including how issues like gender, race, sustainability, and mental health are developed and portrayed in youth literature. Before becoming an academic, Kasey was a primary school educator and teacher librarian in the United States.

Tye Cattanach will be discussing the benefits of using Shelftalkers as a tool in your school library, available teacher resources and writing tips for students, with practitioners who have successfully used Shelftalkers with their own students. In this first event of our 2024 series, we are excited to again hold our very popular Publisher Showcase. 

We are thrilled that this year we will hold the event in partnership with Public Libraries Victoria.

We are back at the Abbotsford Convent and will be using two rooms to run both our short and sharp presentations from all publishers and a publishers’ exhibition that attendees may browse both before and after the publisher presentations while enjoying afternoon tea and the bookshop display.
   
We will be exploring books for primary and secondary age students.  

This event is a must for anyone promoting a reading culture in their school or public library. It is also a great opportunity to chat with colleagues from both sectors.
