The notion of “cultural identity” finds its meaning between two poles. On the one hand, it refers to the characteristics capable of circumscribing a culture as a specific and stable set of institutions, dispositions and representations, including its traditions, languages, customs, arts and beliefs. On the other hand, it designates the way in which belonging to a particular culture influences the behavior, beliefs and understanding that individuals can have.

Cultural identity is often linked to the nation, as it helps shape the collective identity of a group of people within a nation-state. Cultural elements such as language, traditions, music, cuisine and national symbols reinforce the feeling of belonging to a nation.

However, it is essential to recognize that cultural identity is not entirely the same as nation. The State, as an administrative entity, can exist independently of cultural identity. Thus, a state can theoretically include diverse cultures and languages without necessarily forming a single nation.

The decay of cultural identity can have significant repercussions on individuals and societies. When cultural identity weakens, individuals can feel disoriented.

Decadence can cause fragmentation of society and lead to tensions and conflicts for the benefit of the dominant culture.
