I first heard this traditional Irish song sung by Paul Brady on the classic 1970s album he recorded with Andy Irvine. It's simply a great song and I've been singing it ever since. I use my Nigel Forster bouzouki as my main backing on this recording.

A song telling a brief tale of the life of one of Englands most important figures of the time - Matthew Flinders. A circumnavigator, naval officer and the first man to draw a map of Australia. His grave was lost until very recently when it was discovered during the groundwork for the HS2 project in London. A lead plate laid ontop of Flinders was the only marker of his final resting place....

Peg Leg Howell is so named after his lost his right leg in a fight with his brother-in-law. As a result, he began working full-time as a musician, playing street corners and selling bootleg liquor on the side. Later he lost his left leg too, to diabetes. Low Down Rounder is unusually personal and hard hitting emotionally as a result.

Tomorrow Night was a huge hit for Lonnie Johnson, a lesser known blues guitarist today but nevertheless one of the important pioneers in the transition from solo acoustic blues to electric blues soloing.

This was first recorded by Blind Joe Reynolds. Yet another blues musician who really was blind - in Joe's case by a shotgun to the face. Credit for this song's popularity today must go to Eric Clapton who recorded it for Cream's Disraeli Gears album and who also later performed it acoustically.

One Kind Favour is probably better known as See That My Grave is Kept Clean, first recorded by Blind Lemon Jefferson. Many have recorded it since including Bob Dylan on his first album and Lightnin' Hopkins as One Kind Favor. For years Blind Lemon's gravesite was unmarked; finally a marble gravestone was erected and to this day a committee ensures that his grave is indeed kept clean.

One Kind Favour

Hetty Binns was a part of very beginning of the Launceston folk scene in the mid-1960s, and performed at Tasmanian folk clubs and festivals as a solo artist, or as half of a duo, or a member of Shoestring Ban through until 1989. Initially self-taught, Hetty started classical vocal training in 1994, attaining her AMEB Associate in 2002. In 2000 she joined the Launceston chamber music group, Kepler Ensemble with whom she continues to perform songs and arias from the late Renaissance through to the 20th century in English, Italian, German and French.

In recent years Hetty rekindled her love of folk singing, performing in workshops at the Tamar Valley Folk Festival since 2013. At the 2019 TVFF, Hetty presented a themed concert “Songbirds of the 60s and 70s”, celebrating songs written by and/or performed by a number of female folk artists of the 1960s and 1970s, such as Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Joni Mitchell and Buffy St Marie. Hetty’s themed concert at the 2020 TVFF was a presentation of songs telling of different aspects of love – including romantic love, lost love, parental love, love of the bottle etc.

The CD"Love and Other Stories" is the fulfilment of a long-held desire to record some of my favourite songs, several of which I have been performing for over 50 years. They are a mix of traditional and more recent songs written and/or recorded by artists I admire and who have had an influence on me over the years.

The Kepler Ensemble album "Spheres" was recorded in 2008, and only the tracks on which I sang are included here.
