The Lessons in Legacy Podcast is a new series that follows on from Boodle Hatfield's ‘Lessons in Legacy’ research - an initiative that explores what legacy means to families and individuals in the 21st century. The series provides a platform for a dialogue with a number of leading academics, professional advisers and business leaders about the evolution in the approaches, attitudes and adjustments successful individuals and families are taking to plan for wealth transfer. Across the coming months, we will break down some of the themes that are now front of mind for those responsible for family wealth. We will take into account the priorities of the succeeding generation and look at how, in turn, we as advisers can support and steward a legacy’s sustainability and reflect a families’ longer term purpose, values and sense of cohesion.

In the inaugural episode, Partner, Clare Stirzaker is joined by Dr Justin Craig, a visiting Professor of Family Enterprise at Kellogg Business School. Using Justin's research on the strategy, function, management, and performance of multi-generational family enterprises and those who lead and steward them, we look at what the term legacy means in today's world and its connotations, whether the next generation feels hamstrung by the concept of legacy and how business leaders can innovate where a predecessor's legacy is so dominant. 

Justin has authored 46 peer-reviewed academic publications, numerous book chapters and teaching cases and has co-edited several books, all aimed at better understanding the challenges facing business families across the globe and brings some invaluable insights to the episode.

Her advice comes from years of experience working with families in different guises across of the private wealth industry. In the second episode of ‘The Philanthropy Edition’ Alberto Lidji and Clare Stirzaker are joined by Professor Beth Breeze. Beth is a philanthropy scholar at the University of Kent who began her career as a fundraiser and spent a decade working in a variety of fundraising, research and charity management roles. Noting the lack of substantive research underpinning the practice, Beth completed a PhD on contemporary philanthropy and has since written and edited five books. Beth is the UK’s first ever Professor of Philanthropic Studies and in January 2022, she was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) “For services to Philanthropic Research and Fundraising”.

Together Alberto, Beth and Clare look at how, hand in hand, philanthropy can be done more effectively and at greater levels. They consider the concept of quantifying the impact of giving, the role of innovation in philanthropic capital and the idea that no philanthropist is an island – collaboration and partnerships are key.

Lyn is the Head of Impact at Cazenove Capital where she focuses on helping clients maximise impact across all of their assets, whether that be through their grant making or their investment portfolio. Eleanor and James lawyers at Boodle Hatfield. Eleanor is a Partner specialising in charity law, dealing in particular with governance issues, philanthropy and CSR planning for companies. And James’ practice focuses on the legal and commercial challenges faced by high net worth individuals, trusts and corporate structures.

What was clear from our research is that ESG is becoming increasingly embedded within wealth transfer strategies and in turn reshaping what clients need from their advisors. Together Clare, Lyn, Eleanor and James look at this in more detail and consider how the Wealth Management Industry is reacting to increased interest in philanthropy and sustainable investments.
