"The influence and presence of trap and rap in dance/experimental is obviously massive, and the lines between genres are more blurred than ever. HAJJ, however, says this is a recent thing; “I find that the electronic scene in France is just starting to encourage the integration of this culture. Not so long ago people insulted me when I played rap/trap in my sets.”

The underpinning idea for this compilation brought electronic producers not explicitly of that world to unpick whatever boundaries remain and contribute tracks for a mixtape – while a few of the artists are more obviously ready to “play the game” and already make music which exists pretty close to this horizon, this has been a challenge to think creatively for a few of the other artists invited."

As Ki Oni, Chuck Soo-Hoo creates balmy soirees of bubbly minimalism and buzzy weightlessness. And while Ki Oni graced our 2020 Halloween compilation, his proper Geographic North debut `An Evening Stroll to the Garden Party` sees the L.A. resident and dublab delinquent bring two mini-magnum opuses that are rife with romance. Here, Ki Oni art directs an entire evening in a half-hour of moonlit mystique and lascivious luxury.

“Pergola” wanders and wades through an indulgent, glimmering din of gauze. As the sun begins to set, Ki Oni graciously takes your hand with his dear and deft touch, descending down the path to the scene of the sublime. There, melodies bloom and perfume on the scented scaffolding that towers toward the night sky. 

On “Ornamental Plants”, Ki Oni cultivates a cerebral conservatory of flourishing flora. A sweetly scented stream of saxophone, wind chimes, and other terrestrial trimmings blur in a warm fog. Elsewhere, curious wildlife traipse around like some enchanted dream sequence.

'An Evening Stroll to the Garden Party' delivers two side-long odes to the night, ultimately heightening Ki Oni’s place as a consummate charmer and melodious master of ceremonies.

SPA presents I DARE YOU II – a continuous blend of textures, chords and soundscapes by Xzavier Stone. Inspired by and following its predecessor I DARE YOU (self-released in 2022), IDY II consists of 18 individual short compositions, fused together into one unyielding soundscape. The 26-minute piece perfectly captures the gloss and sentiment of Stone’s musical world, while showcasing his versatility as a composer. Xzavier Stone has become recognizable by his subtle and deft spins on rap and RnB music and his penchant for playfulness and experimentation. The sonic palette of IDY II ranges from traditional instruments and shimmering textures to soulful sketches and fragmented piano chops, stretched into something that flawlessly integrates into the world of SPA. While the music of IDY I was combined with a room spray, IDY II now comes with incense sticks. The burn time per stick lasts approximately as long as the music plays, thus serving as a timekeeping device. The incense sticks are handmade in collaboration with In'n'out Fragrances and packaged in a gracefully crafted handmade box. Their fragrance consists of galbanum, frankincense, hinoki, coniferous needle woods, white birch tar, honey comb and muscenone. These scents will put you in a gentle trance as you listen to Stone’s classically infected ambient compositions, mutating sound objects and playful harmonic spheres, softly evoking the aromas of RnB and Jazz.
